Usually, I only keep 7 cookies in my Temporary Internet Files. When I go to bed, I usally find eleven to fifteen cookies there and I delete those.

Last night I had 94. Just now, I only went to the Grumble, checked my Temp Files and I had 37, all with Grumble on them.

What do you think is happening?

PP,

Cookies aren't automatically evil. Some are there to enhance and customize your web-browsing experience. You can set up your browser to block all cookies, but I can guarantee it will be a major pain to navigate The Grumble and other forums and sites you visit regularly.

To learn more than you really want to know about internet cookies, visit here and/or here.

By the way, the Grumble cookies contain your log-in name and password. These are plain text files, viewable with notepad. I don't wish to create a panic, but for those of you who share a computer, it probably is a good habit to delete cookies using the internet options menu under tools in MS Internet Explorer. Just make sure you know your password and log-in name.

This is one reason I'm not good about sharing.

But why would PurP have added that many cookies on the very next visit? And, Purp, are they ALL the Grumble? I delete all cookies at the end of the day except those whose sites I visit a lot. The G only sets up one cookie per visit, so I'm confused about all yours??

They were all for the Grumble. When I visited a couple other bulletin boards I frequent, there were 400+, all from the several bulletin boards.

I defragmented, came here a moment, shut down and I had 90 Grumble cookies.

This is wierd.

Are you sure they are actually from The Grumble? Because I have had some attempt to be saved when on TG from another site. This happens when someone includes an image in their signature which is stored on a site that uses cookies.

In IE 6 you can set whether to save cookies from first- and third-party sites, as well as to ask you if you want them saved on each occurance. In addition, if it is set to ask you, you will also be prompted whether you want it to "Remember my answer?"

I have mine set to indiscriminantly allow first party cookies but to ask me if a third-party site wants one. For instance, when someone (I believe it was Charles Lowry) put a Miller Beer image in his signature, I got a dialog box asking if I wanted to allow www.millerbeer.com to save a cookie, because I was at www.thegrumble.com. If I was at the Miller web site it would be allowed to do it without asking.

I knew it was coming from the signature but couldn't figure out how to eliminate the Miller cookie except manually. Is there no way to do this from IE 5.x?

I think there is, but I can't remember. I'll try to remember to check one of my computers at home that still has 5.x.

This thread alone requires at least 11 cookies. Expand the size of your window and you'll see that each signature (e.g. your dog) on a thread takes another cookie. Depending on the post you visit, the more cookies will show up. Go to tools, internet options and privacy and change your setting for cookies and see if that makes a difference.

Cookies have never been a problem for me and I have never had 11 Grumble Cookies at one time, ever, unless I visited the Grumble almost that many times. I keep 2 Grumble Cookies each night.

This is very new for my computer. I will check out what you said in case I did change something, but I don't remember doing it.

I have always ended up with 11-20 cookies a night, approximately. I then delete all but 7. But not now. They have gone wild.

I have checked my setting and it is on medium. That was my original setting. I see I can block or allow specific cookies. I am going to try that.

It wasn't Charles it was I and I have removed it some time ago. Jin Wicked emailed me that it was placing a Cookie.

But Cookies make the Internet world run smoother and Like Ron said are not necessarily a bad thing. PP's problem may be AOL 8.0 it has a round about way of doing things.

I could be wrong - it happens - but I don't think all temporary internet files are cookies. Some are just cache files to speed up your next visit to a particular site or the reloading of a particular graphic.

Yes. My temporary internet files are not all cookies. Some are even gif files. But whatever we choose to call them, I have forever only had about 15-20 per night and I only kept the 7 "cookies" I needed for my bulletin boards.

Now it is hopeless to keep 7 and I have to keep relogging in everywhere.

I think it is the fact that I downloaded AOL8.0. I have replaced it with my disc of AOL7.0a. We shall see what happens, unless the damage is permanent.

I have also sent for a disc of AOL8.0. I understand, the discs are safer than downloading from AOL. I really liked AOL8.0

PP, are you running low on space that you can't have more cookies than that or is is just one of those things that bugs you?

It bugs me.

I think it could invade my privacy and my computer. I try to keep everything cleared out of my computer that I can. I don't really have anything in it (I hope), that anyone would really want. . . except my identity of course.

I mostly don't understand why everything changed so drasticly. I need the understanding.

I GOT IT FIGURED OUT! I GOT IT FIGURED OUT!

I went to Temporary Internet Files and just hit where it said to Delete Files, and everything went away but my cookies! Then I played around with the advanced tab and in security. I saw a box that said "Empty Temporary Internet File Folder When Browser is closed." There was no checkmark in the box before it. I checked it and "bingo", there are no more of those blasted files.

Thanks to everyone who has anguished over this.
