Hey Gang....
I don't think I have ask this before, if I have I still need some help/Input !!!
I have been doing what I call contract work for some Inferior Decorators and now for a traveling supplier who sells ready mades and all sort of framing acutrements...it fills in the gaps which I seem to have a lot of lately..and it pays the bills, and keeps my puppy fed..anyway ...
They drop ship the moulding to my shop...I whop, I chop, and assemble..they pick them up and there is really no rush factor involved....I have recently raised my cost factor on a per corner basis, but wonder if I should have raised it even higher......Sooooo...pretend for a moment that a few of you guys are like me and work out of a home based shop, and reeeeeeally need the work and the money.....What do you think you would charge for just cutting, glueing & vnailing frames for these folks.....I have checked with my local moulding suppliers prices for this service and did not want to price myself out of business....I have had anywhere from 50 pieces to 250 .....Whatcha think ???

And now for part II:.....
There are times that I will get in the same moulding....then there are times like this last week there are 5 different mouldings....I don't rush the jobs, or really time myself, but since there are 5 varied mouldings/sizes/profiles there is some time variations on each.....

I did do about 256 frames in about 5 days, but it was simple/easy moulding to work with........
I would just like to get an overall pricing structure because I think I have more contracts coming my way and now is the time to get my pricing settled down, a pricing structure that would be fairly simple for them and myself and that would not need some sort of software package to figure it out !!!...Everyone really likes my work...now lets see how well they like it when they see the new price sheet !!!

When I get requests to do this type of work I bill it out at 45.00 per man hour.but you need to know who pays for errors or mistakes. We do on ours but it has been added as a percentage figure on to the shop rate. This rate is for production type projects. The custom shop rate is 65.00/hour.If we are busy and it would cause
overtime pay it would be turned down or it would be renegotiated

J. Michael,
If they scoff, tell them it's due to rising fuel costs!

Based on 48 per day and an 8 hour day you are making 6 frames per hour. At a shop rate of $48 per hour that amounts to $8 per frame. I used these figures (48) for easy math)

Have you thought about about all the other factors involved. Large frame, small frame, ornate frame, reworks.....receiving and delivery time....wear and tear on the shop and the equipment(saw blades and resharpening)....fixed expenses such as rent, insurance, utilities, phone etc etc.

At a shop rate of $48 per hour and six frames per hour produced I would start out a $10 per frame for the basic frames and work from there.

You charge what you think your worth, then, surprise, surprise, that IS what your worth.

John
