Customer brought in a wall map of Wisconsin from the early to mid seventies. Measures 40x48. It has thin wooden strips along the top and bottom with metal loops for hanging fastened to the top strip. My thought was to use the hangers to mount it to malimine(sp?) (thin mdf board stuff) and mylar strips diagonally across each corner to hold it down. I figured I'd use a rag mat between the map and the malimine to protect the map.

1) The map is a heavy paper, does it need protection from the board?

2) The map hung in a bar for 30 years exposed to smoke and dust and whatever, does it need protection from the board?

Why are they framing it you ask. Inspite of it's history, it is in pretty good shape. The owners want to keep it that way. They also want to place dots on select cities without directly marking on the map.

It seems to me that melamine/MDF is going to make this extremely heavy. I'd be more inclined to used Coroplast - either 10mm or a couple 6mm cross-fluted and laminated. You could still use rag board for backing, or fabric. The map could be bolted through the rings.
