Sorry for cross posting on another forum, but I am new to this.We have very long Japanese scroll that is torn on edges and is worn near the rods. What should we use for a support backing? Where do you find materials that we need for something like this?
We are looking for a supplier of conswervation
materials.

Hi Myron,

This is a fairly complicated procedure, even for just the repairs (not a full rebacking).

Try Sarah Melching, a paper conservator in Seattle who is reasonably familiar with Japanese scrolls (attended an intensive workshop on this subject that I organized in the late '90's). Her # is 206 324 5838

Good Luck,

Rebecca

To reiterate the point Rebecca has made, scrolls
are made with delicate tensions built into them
and any modification or adhesion can have disasterous results. They should only be worked on
by well trained professionals.
