i have a confederate rifle that needs to be framed for a customer. I need to get this done in the next couple of days..so time doesnt alow me to order a mighty mount mounting system. i have a couple ideas as to how to secure it. i'd be interested in any other ideas though.
the obvious way to secure it down would be to use some kind of worn looking cording, pulled through the board..tied off on the back. does anyone know of anything that can be used as support underneath the rifle?
i looked in the archives and came up with no previous posts. no wait...i DID come up with one that caught my eye. i typed in rifle first..it was blank. i typed in guns. the thread that came up was "employee appreciation day". LOL. hmmm...go figure.

I have used brass coat hooks from the hardware store. I found a simple single hook and cover it with a clear, soft plastic tubing so it doesn't scratch. I use a suede mat covered plywood as a backing so I can screw these down with brass screws. The trick is to place them so the gun hangs and doesn't fall out - usually 1 at the trigger and a 2nd 2/3 of the way along the barrel but this would depend on the shape of the gun. I build an oak box for the gun and backing and then attach a frame with mats on the front with hinges so the frame acts as a door. The frame can be lifted and the gun removed if needed.

Consider leather shoe laces? Strong & rustic looking.

I would also consider plumbing pipe straps.
A trip to the hardware is a wonderful thing. :D

You could cut a window that has the shape of the
rifle and add a fabric lined sink to it. This would allow half of the weight of the rifle to
be taken up by the sink and would mean that your
support chord would not be doing all the work.

Good luck,

Hugh

Thank you for your suggestions. i ended up going to the hardware store...wandering down each aisle to see what might could work. Its always interesting to tell the sales clerk what i'm trying to do..and see what suggestions they might have. I think it surprises them that this mere slip of a girl can have a conversation with them and actually know what she's talking about. lol.

I ended up using leather strips..tied down on 5 different areas on the rifle. i used wire for added support on the metal areas. il let it sit for a few days..to make sure its not going to slip at all..i'm thinking about using a small dowel pin thats screwed into the wood...as added support to help bearmore of the weight.
