Hi fellow Grumblers,

I was wondering if anyone has used concealed barrel hinges for a Guernsey/Jersey Shadow Box?

I have a project at present, whereby my customer has a full set of RAMBO KNIVES, that he would like to showcase in a shadow box, but would also like to be able to remove them. I was thinking of using the barrel hinges and a snap catch to hinge and close the box respectively. Would the barrel hinges be strong enough? I was thinking of using 4. The moulding is 32mm Wide and 37mm Deep. I estimate that the Frame and Glass would equate to about 1.5Kg when complete.

I will be using magnets to "attatch" the knives to the backing.

Thanks,

Barry

Here's a link to one that I did a little while ago ... a knife collection in a hinged front using barrel hinges and magnetic closure. I think this one had 14mm hinges.

Another type of concealed hinge you could consider is the Soss hinge, but installation is a bit more work than with barrel hinges.

Although as a Brit for the first half of my life I know where the Channel Isles are, I have no idea what a 'Guernsey/Jersey Shadow Box' is! Can you please describe. Thx.

How many mm's in an inch and how many pounds to a Kg. Andrew speaks metric and uses a lot of hinges so he'll be along briefly.

I see he beat me to it.;)

Guernsey/Jersey Shadow Box?

Guernseys and Jerseys are both cows. It is a cow joke.

What a great knife collection! How do you keep them from rusting? I have a straight razor of my grandpa's that I framed and it is now pockmarked with rust.

Thanks everyone!!

Andrew, that knife collection is sensational! The constrction is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I was going to use 16mm hinges, but can see that the 14's will do just fine.

Guernsey/Jersey, here in Oz we call a Football Jumper (as worn by Australian Football League players) a Guernsey, a cycling shirt is a "Jersey". Love the comment about the cow!!!!;)

25mm to an Inch
1Kg = 2.2pounds

Yes they are both types of cows, but originally areas in England, presumably where those cows were first raised. I think jersey would be a kind of fabric, perhaps also made in that part of England, but what about guernsey? This is getting too confusing for me. I think I would opt for a gravity groove frame to avoid the hinging of the front.

P.S. Would a Scottish football shirt be an "Angus"?

Nah ... they're not in England ... they are part of the Channel Isles ...

or would it be a Kilt??

Just had a customer with a pocket knife come in!!!!! Love this job!!

Andrew, if you don't mind me asking, how did you attatch the pocket knives? I don't think i can use a magnet for this one as it is only 4" long and the handle is made of Brass. (using imperial measurments here)!!!!!

Tiny pieces of Velcro hook material on knives, Veltex fabric on mountboard ... bear in mind these are commercial giveaway knives ... not precious collectibles ... owner is president of the company that gives them to fruit growers to maintain brand awareness ... he wanted to be able to once in a while add to or re-arrange collection on show in his offices ... I had proposed some more 'sophisticated' display options but he liked the idea of Velcro something he could easily add to other pieces if the mood took him that way ... he also wanted to keep cost low ... so that's what we did

At other times I have used lots of different methods for knives and similar artifacts including stitches, rare earth magnets, Mylar strap mounts, formed rods, acrylic shelves, etc.

One thing to be careful of when using barrel hinges is to allow for a beefy enough moulding. There is a lot of torque on the frame and it can split the frame.

Love those hinges and earth magnets; I get mine from Lee Valley. Here is a picture of one I did; it's on display in my shop so that I can demonstrate it to customers.
