had an odd thing on my pc----everything had been working ok when all of a sunnden my adware/virus stuff stopped updateing:fire:(BUT my LSS could still reach out there and touch home plate!)----return msgs said the i-net connection wasnt there...not knowing what/where to look for whatever controls that functioning I was reduced to eliminate the ap and reinstall----NOT the way to do it!!!
soooo, I limped along for maybe 2 weeks when MS did one of it's auto-updates and alakazzzzzzzaamm!! every thing can now do what it is supposed to!!!!!!!!

my ?'s are: 1-what do you suppose happened? 2-where do I look to see what's what about this address situation?(I almost remember -couple of years ago-this 'kind' of conection thing hapening and the computer guy 'forced' the pc to regenerate(?) it's address somehow); 3-how did the MS auto update fix the situation?

thanks a bunch for any info

Its really hard to know what may have happened, without seeing it first hand. There have been a LOT of bad malware infections floating around in the past 2 weeks. Some of them disable a/v programs from updating or running at all, etc. Microsoft released a patch to its defender program last week, via Windows Updates, to attack an especially troublesome infection. It's possible that you were infected with that critter.

It might be good to do a third party scan just to make sure you are free of bugs. www.malwarebytes.org I suggest downloading and scanning once with this free tool. (full scan).

Also if you are using AVG FREE I suggest uninstalling it and installing something better. What i'm currently using and loving is Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 www.kaspersky.com It's thorough and has no slow down like some of the others. (mcafee, norton, etc are SLOW)

Remember, any time you remove one av program to install another, you should RE-BOOT the computer after uninstalling. Then you can install the new one after a clean boot.

thanks Mike---what you describe is what sounds like a very plausible scenario(but isn't it strange that LSS could still connect or were they aimed ONLY at virus tools?)--I did a scan with that 'malware' and came up with alot of hits from various types...then did avg/adaware/spybot---they ALL came up with something the others missed--go figure!

LSS wasnt on the infection's list of programs to block. It blocks mostly a/v removal tools, but not regular programs

Side note:

Mike, on hour suggestion, yesterday I bought Kaspersky 2009 for most of my computers. There were discount coupon codes on several of the Googled "coupon code" hits, and one of them saved me 30% on my subscription! However, I had to enter the order by phone in order to get the discount, as it would not "take" for my online order attempt.

Looking forward to installing this weekend and early next week. I should uninstall all vestiges of the AVG anti-virus program beforehand and re-boot for a clean install. Yes?

Yes the reboot after uninstalling the old one is a must.

If the installer gives you trouble about a previous AVG installation, let me know. If so, it requires a small registry change and I can help with this. Sometimes AVG doesnt completely uninstall, and you may see this error when installing Kaspersky.

BIG Kaspersky 2009 bargin???????????? maybe?????

just doing a little surfing :kaffeetrinker_2: on 'KIS's' (AV/IS) and found ComputersWorth.com where they are selling 1usr/1yr AV for 19.33, 1yr 3usr for 36.93 and 1usr/1yr IS for 23.33,1yr 3usr for 44.84........................is this a 'to be trusted'/legit web does anyone know??????????
if so, looks to be the deal of the day for those getting into "KIS"!!!!!!!!!

That looks legit to me. It is often on sale. Even staples features it often with rebates.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 - 3 Users $36.93 seems like a great deal to me. normally that would be $69.95 for 3 machines @ 12 months. (or $99.95 for 3 machines @ 24 months)

I like this one for most frame shops because itll do every PC in the average shop, maybe even your HOME pc too.

The only downside is that it looks like they mail you a box and cd, not instant online download. (so itll be a few days until you have it)

HELP!

If the installer gives you trouble about a previous AVG installation, let me know. If so, it requires a small registry change and I can help with this. Sometimes AVG doesnt completely uninstall, and you may see this error when installing Kaspersky.

Yup, that's what happened with my IBM T41 laptop computer. I uninstalled AVG8, but the Kaspersky installer wouldn't get past the prompt that said AVG8 was still in there.

I then used the Win XP search function to locate about 135 more (!) AVG files, so I deleted all of them, and then rebooted again. Now Win XP's search function says there are no more AVG files on the hard drive, but Kaspersky still says AVG8 is in there.

I appreciate you offer to help. If you'd rather talk me through it by phone, my shop number is 614-868-5554.

I'll give you a call

Mike

Mike -- Thanks for the phone call. Now Kaspersky is kickin' high in my laptop.

Curiously, it found a worm before its initial round of updates was completed. I don't know whether it came while AVG8 was installed, or if it came during the operating time between the uninstall af AVG8 and the installation of Kaspersky. Anyway, I'm running a full computer scan now.

This looks like a very nice program. I appreciate you mentioning it, Mike.

Don't be surprised if it gives you warnings that these programs are outdated and have known exploits:

Apple Quicktime (notoriously bad, gets exploited regularly)
Adobe Flash
Adobe Reader
Java
MS Office

Most people have outdated versions of these, which are subject to abuse. It will also give you links to the fix(es), if needed. www.apple.com, www.adobe.com, www.java.com, www.windowsupdate.com, etc

Best regards and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Mike

PS: Since the computer was unprotected so long, you may want to try a free scan with this utility as well: http://www.malwarebytes.org It's fairly thorough and does a great job.

I received several emails overnight, requesting callbacks for technical support. I guess a lot of folks are trying Kaspersky! :) Help by email is free, but I dont want to put an unfair strain on our business during December by making LD calls instead of working :)

However, here are the (very easy) instructions to remove AVG from your registry. This will remove the last of AVG, so Kaspersky can install properly.

a) Make sure you have removed AVG from the add/remove programs section within the windows control panel, and that you have rebooted the PC.

b) Delete one item from the registry as follows:

Click Start -> RUN -> type REGEDIT and click OK
This opens the Windows registry editor.

Expand +HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
below that, expand +SOFTWARE
left click once on AVG to highlight this item
Hit the DELETE key on your keyboard, and confirm that you indeed wish to delete it.

Exit the registry editor.

You should now be able to run the Kaspkersky Antivirus 2009 installer.

Best regards and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

to fix windows XP-------- as per Mike's font of knowledge! thanks Mike!

It's actually a very easy fix. ;)
Start -> RUN -> type REGEDIT and click OK

This opens the Windows registry editor.

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
below that, expand SOFTWARE
left click once on AVG to highlight this item

Hit the DELETE key on your keyboard, and confirm that you indeed wish to delete it.

Exit the editor and resume install :p
