I need a new compressor for a VN42.

I've read a lot of threads, but haven't found an answer to this, but what size will work? I'm looking at the Jun-Airs...is a 6-4 too small? which models could I get by with of the Jun-Airs and comparable brands?
I've got $300.

let me know if you know of any for sale.

I doubt youll find a new jun-air for $300 :) I assume those are over 1k each?

Our silent blue CM50 from AMS (via DonMar) was about $799. It has only a 6 gallon tank, and is so quiet that you could literally set it right on the design counter while talking with a customer. You probably wouldn't know it was running :) They are about as loud as a small refrigerator.

We picked it up three years ago and it has been flawless to power our VN42 and CMC.

thanks...i mean "new" to us compressor...
the only things we buy new are toothbrushes and underwear.

If you're on a tight budget and want something well-made and quiet (but not "silent"), you might look at this for about $160 to $180: Makita "Mac700" Compressor.
I have a silent one on my CMC, but when the FIAC that runs my v-nailer gives up the ghost I plan to get one of these to replace it.

I bought a FIAC, not to be confused with FIAT but both made in Italy, a little over two years ago. Purchased through DonMar. It's noisey, but runs my CMC, separate hose for cleaning, and underpinner. I think it cost about 450 new.

Yes, the FIAC is a very nice unit. I've had mine for many years. Its noise level is moderate- somewhat quieter than hardware store machines, but no Silentaire. I have mine installed in a cabinet to muffle the sound some.

Most CMCs need 2cfm of air flow (cfm = cubic feet per minute). You can fun a CMC infrequently with a small 1 gallon "hot dog" style tank. But, if you want to run it all day long you should consider a 5-6 gallon tank. If you want to run a CMC and a v-nailer simultaniously you should consider the larger tank. If you run the CMC and then run the v-nailer the one gallon tank will work.

I personally prefer a silent compressor with a tank no smaller than 5-6 gallons, or flow rate less than 2.0 cfm at 80 psi. I have never heard anyone complain about owning silent compressor - other than the inital price.

Thanks for the info Mark.

I am buying the Makita 2400 unelss somebody thinks I am better off with something else for approximately the same price!

It will power a Pistorius underpinner and a Wizard 8000 CMC almost never used simultaneously.

"super quiet motor "

being an old english major---does this mean the motor itself or the motor/compressor comb????? could be either way----LISTEN B$ U buy!!!!

Too funny! Ya'll are my kinda folks. I have a loud Craftsman. I'm home-based, mostly in a spare bedroom (wood and glass cutting in the garage)...that's right - I expect the ceiling-texture stuff to fall on me any day now.
