A very good customer of mine (needlework & needlework framing) came in yesterday with a military photo of her husband and a group in Iraq.
He just retired from the Navy last week and he wanted it framed. She was coming to the shop anyway, so he said "have it framed"...she asked if he cared how...no real comment, EXCEPT, "Tell her the Navy's colors are blue and gold".
OK....
I chat with his wife, she says frame it it raspberry fizz (a shop fav) for all I care...
She of course was kidding, but I was not gonna mess with that one.
I got her to pick a nice moulding and asked if she knew specifics about the "blue & gold"...nahp.

Anyone out there do a lot of miltitary stuff. I have NEVER done anything for the military and would hate to disrespect it.

Suggestions?:o

Cathy, I do a lot of military shadowboxes here (helps to be very near the eastcoast Canadian Naval base in Halifax)... Anyway, customers often choose Bainbridge's Midnight suede matboard (#4150) for their 'navy' themed frames.

Thanks Karen...I will us that! Um gold? Metallic? Does it matter?

Ray....um, thanks for the pic, a name or number woulda been cool, but meebee your tired?
Um thanks!

Never actually used a gold matboard with any of the military shadowboxes that I've done (not to say that you couldn't) - perhaps Bainbridge's gold (#8003) would work?

Do you have any gold fillets that you could use? Fotiou has a nice narrow gold rope fillet that might work (rope ~ navy theme ??) - the # is 7208GO (fillet labeled as "H" in the below picture)

Fillet labeled "A" is a wider gold rope design (#3624GO) which looks nice too.

Since Karen brought it up, a customer brought to my mind moulding LJ277G. Has a nice high polish gold luster with a rope compo on the top. Used for many of her Navy photos, an army medical arm band, and my sister's wedding photos.

I LIKE It...I will work it up for her...she is in here every week for stitch group and is one of those divine customers that says just do it and lets me...I love her!
Love the filet idea cause I love filets!

Here is a list of the "Official" US Navy colors. Don't know if this will help.

Description Pantone Matching System
Blue PMS 275
Gold PMS 125 (or metallic ink)

Just a quick fact:
Blue represents the oceans and seas
Gold represents valor and integrity

Large Navy base here. I frame tons of stuff for them. Basically, any medium to deep blue mat will work. As for gold mats, sometimes we use metallic ones, and sometimes they prefer matt finishes. One unit likes to mat everything in black. We use simple black frames on 99% of the Navy stuff that we do, from 1" to 1 3/4" wide.

Some of our mats of choice are:
Crescent 9848 Jet Black
Bainbridge 878526 Renaissance Blue (a black/blue combo, looks nice)
Crescent C9554 Pharoah (blue)
Bainbridge 8003 Gold (metallic)

Those are the mats we use on about 90% of the Navy orders. We sell them so often that I stock all but the gold.

The most popular frame is International 440-10, a slightly rounded 1" black. Sometimes they go for the Omega 79670, a 1 5/8" beaded/scooped black, when they want to give a present to someone "a little higher rank" than normal.

If they are willing to fork out a little more, I have to tell you that I love a dark blue suede on Navy stuff. The suede has a "water pattern" look to it that looks great. I framed a letter (double-glassed so you can read both sides) from a sailor that died on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor in it. Bainbridge 4150 (Midnight) and Crescent 7113 (Marine Blue) both work GREAT.

Chickie, I live in Pensacola the home base for the Blue Angels and we do most if not all of their framing. The blue mat they use is Lapis and the frame for 16x20's is International 620-65. For their "Cadillac" frames in 20x24 they have a variety of moulding (depending on price and availability) but all are 2 1/2 to 3 inch wide cherry in color, similar to the I-620-65. I don't think we have ever used a gold bottom mat.
Hope this helps, Randy

I would use the the Bainbridge's Midnight suede matboard (#4150) with the gold rope fillet. IMHO.
