I had a customer come in looking for a colored float frame for a particular painting. She pointed to a frame I have hanging on the wall (cheap readymade) and said she'd like it in that color (kind of a desaturated pale yellow/mustard color).

First question: does anybody make float frames in colors? When I check my catalogs, they all seem to be black, gold, silver, natural wood, or white.

Second question: For those who do custom finishes, how do you price this sort of thing? She doesn't want woodgrain to show, so a "simple" paint job should do it, though I'd have to mix a custom color... thoughts?

Thanks!

Jim... what's your question? Just do it!

Charge for the frame, the paint and your shop time.

Use a wood frame, paint with gesso then mix up some acrylic - bingo - three coats should do it (and paint before you join - makes the corners a lot easier to paint!).

If you do not have the painting supplies, add a materials cost to your shop time and your frame cost.

Easy peasy!

I add on about $5 per LF (give or take, mostly give ;) ) for every step I take in finishing the frame, sanding $5, color or dye $5, applying finish $5, polish with 600 grit sand paper and wax $5... I then add that to the retail per foot charge. That will put in a price bracket of most hand finished mouldings.
