Moving shop looking for new opportunities in retail framing field. Seeking new lifestyle for retirement years with 25 years of framing background as shop owner. Thinking on central Colorado or eastern part of Texas, any advice? Husband is master plumber with 30 years experince and debating on his seeking outside employment or combining the two of us in retail frame shop business.

No offense, but if you move to Texas you'll be surrounded by Texans all the time.  :D

Then again, being from Louisiana, Colorado sure is gunna get COLD!

I'd pick Colorado. Not because of the Texans, that was just a joke. I just have always loved Colorado. Very pretty there.

There is a saying that non-birth right texans have, that all native texans will accept...

"I wasnt born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could."

I was born in South Dakota and reared in Nebraska.
But I am a TEXAN!

I love texas. Look, this is what I see....
you have the ocean. Port A and South Padre are great fun and my spiritual pilgramage site.
you have the mountains: the Davis mountains at 5,000 feet altitude, yes, you can ski there.
You have the desert, West texas, Lubbuck and Big Bend area.
VIVA TERLINGUA

Then there is the Hill country where I live.
The Llano, Guadalupe, Colorado and San Saba Rivers! a Kayakers Dream come true...

Luchenbach were Willy and Walen sing.
( I have my cowboy boots signed by Willy at the 4th of July party)
Fredericksburg.... the next aspen, accept add in the German heritage, Octoberfest, and beer dreenkin heavn.

Mason, where I live, Gem of the hill country, the only place in TExas where you can find the State Gem.... BLUE TOPAZ.

Austin!!!!! Music central of the world.

San Antonio, Best Mexican food you will ever eat. EVER!!!

FORT WORTH!!! YOu will love Sundance Square~ and the what ever is showing at the Bass Concert Hall.

East Texas is Beaumont! Swamps and Alligators, Cajun MoJo and some of the best artists in the land.

ok. I have lived in Colorado too. and I think that TExas has WAY more going for it, than Californians taken over, Colorado......

Move to texas!~
But that is just my opinion

Of course it takes three days hard driving to get to each of those spots from wherever you settle... :D

If Peavy and Dave didn't convince you to go Colorado, just take a drive about now up over the pass from Aspen to Pueblo.... [Independence I think]

Stop at the top. Slow your heart rate enough to start noticing the miniture bluebells, miniture poppies, and ground heather. Now look out . . . out all the way to Pike's Peak.

Down below is a town called Cannon City. Used to have the Giant Burger. 31 years later, I can still taste the French dijon mustard on that beefallo burger.

If I wanted to slow down that far, that's where I would go.

Besides, anywhere in Texas is to close to Crawford.

The two different times we lived in CO, my only complaint was, no ocean, too landlocked.

Have you visited both to see? I don't think you can pick by our suggestions; there are some crazy people on this board that live north of the Mason Dixon line by choice. :D

It really depends on what YOU are comfortable with- if you go to CO, you will miss those darlin' bugs.

Having said all that, my grandmother returned to TX to have all her children- all six of them. Two of those "returns" included hopping the big pond. Now that's a dedicated Texan.

So you see why I'm not officially allowed to endorse CO, which would be my choice in a second.

Well there are lots of things to consider beyond geographical attributes.

My observations from of Both States:

Driving time: If you live in central texas, it takes and hour at least of 70mph highway driving to get to the next town. In Colorado, it takes an hour of 30mph of windy, mountainous roads to get to the next town. Unless you are on I70.

Politics: most people in Colorado are died in the wool, Democrats. Many a time during my stint in Aspen, the people would put an animals life before yours and never blink. Bush is EVIL! and if you leave your dog tied to a tree, in the shade, in 70 degree weather your neighbors will have fit and report you to Animal protective services. Lots of pot smokin goin on there openly AND no one will say hello to you if you say hello first. And what ever you do DONT disagree with them.

In Texas, people are died in the wool republicans.
People say Hello to you first, stop you ask you where you are from, and want to know all about the weather there. ( of course they are secretly hoping that you will take the next bus out of town). Bush is OK.( I did not say great, or "god's gift"... just OK.) People love their pets here, but keep them undercontrol or they might get shot by the neighbor. People smoke pot, but behind closed doors, and cant wait for their Mexican to get here, cuz therz work to be done. And what ever you do Dont disagree with them.

Cost of Living: Property in Colorado is getting very hard to come by. In Texas there is always a rancher splitting up the back 40. In Colorado, you get paid more, but it is relative because it costs ALOT more there to play, eat, and have a roof over your head, ANd you have to pay State AND Federal Taxes. In Texas, there is no STate tax, but substantial property taxes.

Food consumption: In Colorado they drink Pepsi and Coorse beer. I can not think of a single ethic food that they perfect, outside of GOURMET.
The Gourmet food is divine.
In Texas they drink COke....well it is all Coke, you have to tell them what kind. Shiner Bock Beer and dont mess with their BBQ, Chili, or Mexican food, because you can not improve on perfection.

Employment: In Colorado it is an employee's market! You want a job there, you can get one anywhere you want and at what ever status quo you need. In Texas, you have to work the good ol'boy system. Job openings are few and they are looking for the BEST qualified person, so have your resume up to date.

Want to start a business there: either place, it needs to be location, location, location. Look for a place that has a population over 4,000, and make sure there is not a similar business in a 40 mile radius.

As far as plumbing goes, your husband will always find work, even if there are 8 other plumbers in the same town, and even if he is unliscenced. People dont care, they just want to be able to flush the toilet.

Peavy, Aspen is like a different planet (I was going to say like a different country, but it's even weirder than that!)compared to the rest of the folks in Colorado. I lived there in the mid-70's and it was like that even then, snooty. I think no-one wanted to know anyone else because they were paraniod, or afraid they might have to share their drugs!)

But in the other parts of Colorado, I found them to be some of the nicest people I've ever met. From what I hear and the Coloradans I know, it doesn't appear to have changed much that way.

Peavy, most of your comments are dead on in a general way, but
I am amazed at the " I can't think of any ethnic food they perfect" comment. I'm with Val; Aspen is a whole 'nother planet!

I lived in CO the year we voted on legislation that would make Spanish the legal language of Colorado.

Not to put the Mexican food up to Tex Mex, but there's some seriously fabulous Mexican food in CO...I'm not talking about Casa Bonita, either. :D

I lived in Golden with my family. There were incredibly friendly people that would say hello without prompting, give directions, pull your Southern wayward self out of a snow bank, etc. etc.

Now that was back in the late 80's, and I lived right behind DU in the early 90's, so all that friendly stuff may have changed since then.

Bet the food hasn't!

(Emibubba, ya gonna weigh in on this?)

Gumbogirl,

It could be that there is good Mexican food in Colorado, because there are ALOT of illegal immigrants there, working in the food service industry???

If by chance all your ex's live in Texas...I'd go with Colorado :D

I am going to Denver, Colorado Springs, and Silver Plume this week. I will try the ethic food there and let you know!

If there is anything else I can research for you, just let me know.

Yes, please. I am looking for a great fish taco recipe I had one in Santa Barbara.

Could you check on that for me, Peavy? Since you offered..

Wow Peavy, I just gotta defend some of that you said.....

Driving time: If you live in central texas, it takes and hour at least of 70mph highway driving to get to the next town. In Colorado, it takes an hour of 30mph of windy, mountainous roads to get to the next town. Unless you are on I70.

There are plenty of roads as Peavy described but, well over half of the state is not in the mountains. We even got us some paved roads here in Denver.

Politics: most people in Colorado are died in the wool, Democrats.

Check your facts peavy, much to my embarassment Colorado has been a <font color=red><font size=7>red</font color></font size> state for as long as I can remember.

Many a time during my stint in Aspen, the people would put an animals life before yours and never blink. Bush is EVIL! and if you leave your dog tied to a tree, in the shade, in 70 degree weather your neighbors will have fit and report you to Animal protective services.

Agree with you there totally, we love our animals!

Lots of pot smokin goin on there openly

Denver did just pass the first pot smoking rule in the country, but people have tested it and have not come out on top, so, smoke em if you got em but be discreet.

AND no one will say hello to you if you say hello first.

Tourism is a major force in our economy, I doubt people would continue to come back if this were true. Now that Hunter S. Thompson is gone The rest of us are very friendly.

And what ever you do DONT disagree with them.
What the **** is that supposed to mean?

In Colorado they drink Pepsi and Coorse beer.

I only wish that were true, I am a Pepsi girl and unless I go to a fast food place owned by Pepsi it is Coke everywere.....and it is C-O-O-R-S ...........we do love our COORS.
I can not think of a single ethic food that they perfect, outside of GOURMET.

When you come to Denver go to LA Loma, it is a Denver institution for Mexican food.

Employment: In Colorado it is an employee's market! You want a job there, you can get one anywhere you want and at what ever status quo you need.

If only that were true. Job market is tough here right now unless of course you are an illegal alien. Colorado seems to still be in a recession.

I'm just clearing up some facts there. Can't have a pissing match with Texas, I've never been there, I'm sure it is lovely.

Colorado is a great place to live. Louisville just got awarded the best place to raise a family. You can pretty much see the mountains from wherever you are. The weather is as it should be. 4 seasons a year, although fall and spring are usually pretty short. Our winters have continued to get milder and milder. Be prepared to want a SUV if you come here. We have way over the national average of them here. I swear where I live 19 out of 20 people drive SUV's. So, leave that little Prius at home.

We have our share of big city problems as any big city does. We seem to have our fair share of road rage, at least from my lengthy commute everyday. It is all those California and Texas plates we seee goofing things up and pissing us off.....in fact a weekend in the mountains is usually bumper to bumper going in and coming down, so much for the great outdoors.............

Of Course, those were all generalizations, not meant to offend anyone. Trust me, what most people think about texas and texans aren't true either.

Hey,I know a lot of really really nice Coloradans, and some not so nice texans. Not everyone here talks like John wayne and rides a horse. And there are a lot of Dems here too.

I am glad that you are defending your state. I was wondering if we were going to hear from someone there.

I really like both states alot. I am heading to Colorado tomorrow and I am really looking forward to it. I wouldn't go if I thougth it was a terrible place.

Not really defending my state so much as clearing up your misnomers Peavy. You were painting a particularly unflattering picture. Hard to tell if you were kidding or not.

Much of what I know about Colorado, is from living in Aspen. And it was very unflattering.
Most every negative reference I had, actually happened in Aspen, on a regular basis.
The staunchly democratic biases, fining YOU because a bear is in your house threatenging your life, they will take you to court for protecting your family, they were snooty and rude, and they were only interested in their own opinions. Thank God, the rest of the state is not like that.
And the job market I referred to was PRE- 911, and the getting was GOOD.

Now, I now that Aspen, is it's own planet. We had an absolutely horrible experience there and put a really really bad taste in our mouths when we think about going back.

I can not even mention the word "Colorado" to my husband with out opening up a can of worms. Needless to say I am not traveling with him.
In his mind, Colorado=Aspen. I wonder how many other people feel the same?

I look forward to getting to know the rest of the state a little bit better.

And yes, it is really hard to tell when people are kidding when you can not hear their intonations.

See, now, I just decided you were kidding about stirring up the illegal immigrant topic, so I went ahead and pictured you typing that with an evil grin on your face, or tongue firmly in cheek, bringing that up after it has been such a recent hot topic.

Sometimes even if we're kidding some people get their knickers in a twist. I guess it's a lot perception, and a lot the mood we're in when we read it.

Kiss CO hello for me, it's been too long since I've seen the Rocky Mountains.

In 1974 Aspen was that way.... it was all them dang Hollyweird types moving up for parts of the year.

So all us low-life worker bees lived in Snow Mass....

Heard that was gone now too.

Kinda sounds to me like you aught to try Ohio or Iowa too..their big on generalizations. :D

  Baer, this is just too weird, and I'm starting to think you've been following me all these years...I was in Aspen in 1974! Worked at Aspen Highlands ski area...just a kid then, but we sure had fun!!

When I was a young lad sitting on my daddy's knee on the porch out on the ranch overlooking the Rio Grande, he said "Son, don't ever ask anybody where they are from. If they're from Texas, they'll tell you soon enough"

"And if they're not, well, it just wouldn't be nice to embarass them"

Having grown up in Texas, it's a little like being a Marine-there just aren't any ex-Texans.

Settle where you wish; you'll probaly find happiness wherever you take it. But, I have never seen anyplace where pride in state just comes more naturally

We have a large Texas flag in our stores and a framed print in my home of the Alamo

Any Coloradoans want to match that?

Nope, not me Bob. In fact based on what you said I am going to pack my bags and move to Texas myself!

If you are coming to Texas, come either to East Texas or go to the Hill country. But whatever you do, don't go any further west than Ft. Worth ( and maybe not that far)...I think all they have out that way is armadillos and rattlesnakes...But East Texas is very pretty and of course hot. I loved the Hill Country...Fredricksberg, Gruene...that whole blame area is neat. Stay away from Houston...think most of those folks are nuts!!! But I would like to go to Colorado for a visit...they'd just have to put up with my Republican bent and my accent.
