I have a client who is moving to the Birmingham, Ala., area this weekend. He will be looking for a framer so I am asking the group for referrals. Thanks for your help!

HangingAroundHoover is in that area, well, a little further south, but Hoover, B'ham, Mountainbrook, Highland all run into one another anyhow. I used to work and live down there, and I believe he would be a good match for good quality custom work.

I have two questions. How technologically enabled are they and are they good clients? I guess the reason I'm interested is everyone seems to be concerned on how the internet will affect the framing industry.

If they have both qualities, would you be able to keep them as clients by having them mail you their artwork, e-mail them design previews created with visualization software, and then ship the work back to them? Does anyone else out there make a concerted effort to keep clients even if they move out of state or is it just more of a hassle?

Good point, by the way, Fashionista, I love your web site! Very creative and edgy. Does the web site sell a lot of art?

If you take a pen and draw a line from New Orleans up to Little Rock and across to Chattenooga, then down to Atlanta, and end the line at the Gulf below Tallahassee, that is the general area of our scope of business. My boss is always working on the internet and using FAX to brainstorm ideas between her and the clients who are out of this area. It requires a bit of work and some imagination but it helps alot with selecting artwork and interior accessories for our clients. These are not just one time and done customers who visit here and buy a souvenir to remember the Emerald Coast by, these are repeat clients who spend thousands of dollars with us and depend on us for their fine art needs. We are working now on building a website so we can further this area of business and expand our offerings that much more to the public.

BTW, I do alot of custom framing for clients in the B'ham area so, if you don't find another framer that is closer and suitable, please have them contact me and give me a chance to serve their needs for custom framing.

Thanks in advance for the potential referral.

After 31 years, I'd say that very few even tell us they are moving. So, no, we have no experience in this area.Sometimes when customers drop thier names from the newsletter list, they put a notation in the reason field that usually says, "moved out of the area." But the idea is food for thought. I may add something into a future newsletter about this. I think a client would have to be a VERY regular customer to bother to send art out of state. There are plenty of good independent framers all over the country and I have recommended quite a few framers on this forum to those visitors from out of town.

Thanks! It's been up for two months and so far, no art sales...

With the right marketing, they should come. We are in the design business, and a well designed site is a huge asset. I like the art because it is different, bright, modern. We started putting prices on most framed art for sale on the site and that has helped long distance sales somewhat. We have even had calls from people who want such and such frame that they saw on another piece of art on the site for thier wedding photo. We shipped one to Boston last week.

BTW, your enthusiasm for the business is just wonderful, and it shows on your site. It makes me want to come and visit! Very well written, including the blog which I see you update regularly.
