This is my first post, so please be gentle!!! Can anyone give me some hints as to the safest way to clean a very old ivory sculptue of the Crucified Christ figure. This was found in the basement of an old church, and I think it is only surface dirt. There is no interst in sending this to a conservator. Thanks for the help.

This should ONLY be done by a consevator. Ivory
is extrememly sensitive and if the grime will
not come off with a sable brush and very gentle
brushing, it must be sent to a trained conservator. Framers must avoid tackling risky
projects done as favors to those who do not want
to spend the money such work requires. Keep your
own well being foremost in your business plan.

Sudsy, Hugh is right don't do it. If the church doesn’t want to pay to have it cleaned properly, just frame it dirty and say it's part of the pieces character! :D

And WELCOME to the 'G'

P.S. could you fix the 'Homepage of your business' under your profile? I would love to see you biz!
