Cleaning a atg tape gun

Okay, maybe others will chime in, too. But here's my opinion.

I've had my gun for 7 years and its never been cleaned. I think changing tapes is easier with it being a little gummy.

I suppose if it HAD to be cleaned, I'd physically take off as much as I could by hand or with a blade and then use some UNDO or something.

But then I'd probably hate it.

I just wipe it all down with Unseal to remove the buildup. If it is really bad I will take the gun apart and soak the pieces in the solvent then wipe it down. Either way it's a sticky job but somebody has to do it.

Before breaking out the solvents, a good deal of the residue can often be removed by dabbing it with a rolled piece of good-quality masking tape. The less residue exposed to solvent, the less slimy goo will result. And use a real rag to remove the goo. Shredded Kleenex fibers only make the mess worse.*

Janet- I find that any residue in the dispenser will cause the backing paper to bind and start winding itself in reverse onto the feed spool under the new tape supply.

*Do not then use that rag to clean glass

It may depend on the gun and who makes it. I had a Specialty Tapes gun whose rollers got too much crud on it. I used naphtha (lighter fluid) – I mean, why not, it takes adhesive off of prints, right? Instead of removing the adhesive, the rollers themselves got soft and tacky and completely unusable.

I ended up having to replace the whole tool since Specialty Tapes doesn’t sell individual part replacements.

I’d try a mechanical method first before attempting chemical solvents.
