Does anyone out there know of a location in the southwest where the art of gilding is taught? I make custom moldings/frames and have attempted gold leaf but not happy with the results. I live in Las Vegas, anyone in this area willing to share their expertise?, Thanks, John

If you have the basics then only practice will make you better.

If you don,t have the basics then be prepared to go to a good teacher and travel far if you have to and watch them do their work. Its the best way to learn.

Eric Tollefson (sp?) is an expert gilder and frame finisher/refinisher. His classes are offered at most major trade shows, including the West Coast Art & Frame (WCAF) show in Las Vegas. He always gets rave reviews from his students, regardless of their skill level.

Watch Picture Framing Magazine for dates of the 2004 WCAF - it's probably in January.

Also might want to contact Cornel Rosca. He knows about gilding, the 'Old World' way, and, while I don't think he gives classes, he may know of someone in your area that does.

If you've ever seen his hand-gilded frames, it's pretty obvious he 'knows what he's doing', as we say here in the South.

Look for posts by 'American Choice'.

Marty Horowitz and Yozo Suzuki teach classes every year in January in Vegas. If you can't wait that long, he has a shop in Santa Fe called Goldleaf Frammakers of Santa Fe. His shop # is 505-988-5005.
Good luck!

B.
