We do painted 8ply bevels with acrylic paint regularly and have got good at it. Once or twice when the mat is circular, we tried painting the bevel but it was tricky. I am wondering if there are any methods you may recommend to make it easier. For rectangular bevels, we use removable tape. For circular bevels, we cut a top 4ply mat exactly the right size to cover the top of the 8ply mat. Then place a lot of heavy weights on top and paint. The only thing is that any acrylic paint gets under the top mat, it would be hard to clean.
Thank you,
Bruce

Get a 1.5 mm or 2 mm calligraphic broad pen nib and a penholder to go with it. Mix acrylic airbrush paints (acrylic gouache) to match the color you need, then thin it with just enough water to make it flow through the pen.

Load the pen with the writing fluid and then hold it at a compound angle on the mat bevel, so that the nib's width covers the whole bevel surface. Draw the pen along the bevel. No tape. No masking fluid.

The acrylic airbrush colors will dry with a matte finish. If you want gloss, just buff the paint with a burnishing tool.

Practice first, of course.

OH Great. Yet another skill I want to stop everything else to learn how to do.
Will add it to my "framers bucket list" 👍

Yes, I thought Ursula looked a few years younger 😉. By all accounts, she's an accomplished framing expert.

For a video of that vintage, it is exceptionally good. It's too bad we don't have a plethora of good video demonstrations in our little industry by now.
