Chopper Mess

Always used cardboard boxes with a Morso. I have a Hansen that has a chute in the back that goes to a box.

Back when I had a Morso in my old shop, I set it on an 8" high platform with a big hole in the top and a slide-out box underneath to catch the chips. (The box was big enough so the operator could stand on it to operate the chopper... otherwise I'd be kneeing myself in the jaw to lift my leg high enough...)

The reason for the platform was that it raised the chopper bed to the same height as my saw bench... which I could then use as an outfeed support.

I use a big old shop vac at the end of the day and just suck up all the chips. Works great, IMO even better than the chute on the Hansen.

We have the same thing (though only about 4" high) on both our choppers. The main reason being that we like the chopper against a wall and it's just about impossible to empty the "mess" any other way...

WOW, that's a great idea. I was recently trying to figure out a good method to use the Morso in the saw area. This solves the problem completely!

For the chips, my Morso has a chute, but I cut a cardboard box with flaps to fit under the chute and up-taped the sides. No more mess!

;)

Being too mean to buy a proper chute, I once rigged up a cardboard one, with a sideways chute at the end that dropped all the chippings into box. Surprisingly enough, it worked quite well. But as it was all held together with parcel tape it eventually fell off and became a pain. Too lazy to make another so it was back to scooping it all out by hand. NOT my favorite job.

Get a Jyden...the cleanout is in the front.

I went to a farm and feed store and got a horse trought that is just right...it's strong plastic and straight on 3 sides and the 4th side is angled...fits under the shute angle side and it also has a heavy duty handle to carry it to the scrap pile with

I have mine on a raised platform kind of but not quite like David's. The opening is on the side and I just slide a shop vac in there once or twice a month. Although I once did let it get so bad then when I stepped down on the pedal the whole chopper lifted up :) That took quite a while to clean out that time :)
