Try a sponge paint brush (the throwaway type that they sell in any hardware store). That works well for suede mats and would probably work for velvet.

Kari have you tried one of those roller type lint removers? They are made of rubber that has a sticky surface and can be rejuvinated by simply running it under water. They come in a small pocket size and a large almost "Paint roller" size. They shouldn't do any harm to the threads since they are soft rubber and low tack . I have seen them almost every where even the grocery stores . Give it a try.

go to the grocery store---or 1$ store and pickup one of the tape covered lintpickeruppers....works great...tear off old tape & start again!!!(or in a pinch just use masking tape strips)
