I was wondering if anyone has put together a check list of each step to prepare for setting up a web site?
Project timeline type thing detailing what has to be done and what you need to procure.

Thanks Bob
Can't break it down since I don't know what steps are involved....let alone the order to which put them.

step one: choose a matt.
Okay "but you need to know if it is a paper mat or ragmat you should use"
step two: cut frame
"cut it on chopper or a saw?"

Start a web site: ask what should be done, what to use & in what order.

step one: determine what content you want = ecommecre 10,000 hardgood items with grahics and frame visulization software with gallery & bullitenboard.
step two: choose host... determine band witdth & what ever .....how?
step three: choose OS.... how & why?
step four: build web pages .... how & what software

I just thought that if some framers saw my name popping up they'd check out the thread to throw barbs at me and then your question would get answered!

The look of your site should be utmost importance, thenthe ease of setting up "stuff" should be important.

I started using a guy at eacontent.com solely because I wanted to get a site up and running and Jim walked in the door right when I was scratching my head. I've set up my own site in the past, but he does it way different! He's an old newspaper guy so the menu and setup stuff are all in newspeak, story, content, blah blah blah.

But he does the initial work, he is there fo r phone support and he can set up a store for you.

The nice thing is you send the full size picture and the software does the thumbnails and enlarging. Since he is from the paper world any ads you want to do from the website will be in newspaper compatible sizes and configurations (he'll walk you through it all)

Go to the site and checkout the ones he has set up. Like I said, I can do it, I have done it, but I know I won't do it. He really helped me get up and running. And quickly.

You shouldn't bother worrying about unix vs microsoft. That's back room stuff, you should worry about the look and the outside stuff.

just like I don't care whether my steak was cooked on a Vulcan or Aga, gas or electric. just as long as it was cooked! Let the back room do backroom work and the store front do store front work ;)

I think the checklist would depend on what your vision is for your website. If you just plan to grow into it, all you need to do is design a template & stylesheet, then start with a single homepage with your contact information. From there, the template can be used to build each section of the site.

If you're planning to establish a major e-commerce operation, then you're out of my league.

Answer the following questions, and depending on your answers I can give you some sort of check list.
1. What does your website need to achieve?
2. Who are your target audience? Who do you want you website to reach?
3. Will I sell online? Is so what?
4. Do you want to be able to update your website yourself? If so, what do you want to be able to update? Content only or design too?

Troy

Hi Gumby,
Have a look at my (amatuer) web site - and open page 2.

List of framers with good web sites - maybe give you some ideas to copy - or even some to avoid.

James,
Here's your next set of questions you want to answer:
1) How much money do you want to spend on the website? (Initial and monthly cost)
2) How much time do you want to spend building & maintaining your website?
3) What is you time line for building your website?
4) Do you posses or are you willing to learn the following skills:
a. Graphics creation/editing (using photoshop, GIMP, other)
b. HTML / CSS
c. Javascript / AJAX
d. Some web language (ASP, PHP, .NET, Coldfusion, other)
e. Copy creation/editing
f. SEO optimization

You don't have to answer the above questions in this forum for everyone to see. These questions will just help you determine if you are better of getting a pre-made shopping cart web application or Content management system that has shopping cart capabilities or building your own from scratch.
Regards,
Troy
