I have spent the past few days struggling with antique and current pieces that customers wanted us to remat, or preservation mount. After realizing that we were charging far too little for this, I wondered how some others may be charging for this?

We are currently charging an extra fitting fee to cover taking older pieces apart, and this works as long as there are no other issues. But trust me when I say that some of these pieces have more issues than than Life magazine.

when it comes to things that are unknown until they are opened, working based on a shop rate is best, not a fixed chart.

As for fitting charges it depends on how much cleanup has to be done (old ATG or Duct Tape, or old animal glue) how bad the glass is, rejoining, etc. Most charges are in the area of 1 1/2 to 2+ times standard rates.

It's always a good idea to open the art while the customer is with you so that together you can discover some of the challenges that you are going to meet! This also helps avoid any debates over who may have done what to the artwork! For example I recently opened an heirloom document dating back to 1826 that the previous framer had glued to some nasty looking substrate ... the client was dismayed ... much better that she saw the condition on presentation to me rather than some years down the road when she might wrongly assume that the inappropriate handling was caused by me!
