Many time we just go to Office Depot or Staples and remove the cheap frame for boards that are 36 x 48 or smaller and replace them with new ones. Same for "white boards".
Are you sure you want "chalk" boards? Most designers we work with want "white" boards that work with dry erase markers.
The better quality chalk boards are very heavy and made from porcelain.
You can buy "chalkboard" paint and make custom boards too.
Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get chalk board paint. I have been doing these myself with a roller on masonite. Very easy and inexpensive at just over $1 per square foot for paint and board combined.
Thanks, Jeff. HD and Lowe's were my initial thoughts, but I wanted more info. from others. Does the chalkboard paint go on smoothly, and does it hold up? I have heard it had a tendency to crack and not erase well.
As with any painting job, the chalk board paint will only be as good as your prep work. Properly prepare the surface, and you will have a nice chalkboard that will last a long time.
The chalkboard paint has been available for quiet a while now. Must be a reason it's still available. (Normally bad products tend to disappear from the shelves.)
When it rolls on you will worry that there are going to be roller marks but it dries beatifully. No prep work and no cracking. The 8 year old uses hers everyday so it definately stands up to use.
Sister, I install chalkboards for schools and we get them from several large manufacturers here in the USA. They can do many options including custom made but they can get pricey depending upon the quality. Try Best-rite out of Plano Texas 800 749-2258 or Ghent (you can google). There are two tohers that I have worked with but i cannot think of their company names off hand.
