I am looking into studying for and taking the PPFA exam. What advice could an all knowing, knowledgeable, expert framer, such as yourself, give to me. What should I do first? What meterials should I read? What would you do if you had it to do all over again? Is there a source that would answer all my questions?

Judy, there is a recommended reading list for the CPF (Certified Picture Framer) exam offered by the PPFA. These are all books that would be very nice to have in your reference library anyway, but some PPFA chapters (ours, for example) have lending collections available. You can get the list from the PPFA along with a study guide and some sample questions.

I'd say it is essential to read the study materials, even if you have had many years of experience. I've been a licensed driver for 36 years, but if I had to take the written test today without reading the driver's ed book, I'd probably have trouble.

The CPF certification is the most widely used and recognized for framers in the U.S. You'll occassionaly see the The Fine Art Trade Guild's, GCF, Guild Commended Framers (GCF) certification offered in this country.

Judy,
I've been framing for 9 years and just took my CPF® test last May. I passed. I would recommend reading Vivian Kistler's Picture Framing Vol. 1, Chris Paschke's Mounting and Lamindating Handbook,Paul Frederick's Answer Books 1&2, PPFA's two books on Guidelines for framing works on paper & art on canvas, and also PPFA's Dictionary of Art & Picture Framing Terms....
These books should help. You can also find loads of framing information on the internet by doing searches. Good luck! ps. don't forget to take a calculator with you when you take the test.
