I need help finding an owners's/operator's manual for the Carithers Signature Oval Mat Cutter.

Welcome to the Grumble!

I believe the product was sold until about 1996 by Larson-Juhl. Their tech dept is 800-438-5031 and you can probably order a manual through that #.

Here are some older discussions that have maintenance tips and information for this product:

Carithers Oval/Circle Mat Cutter

Hi,

Just recently joined the Grumble. I was looking for information on a recently acquired piece of equipment above. I am looing for documentation on this cutter and some help with use. I have practiced cutting the ovals and circles and I can't get a good clean cut. I am leaving a little point which sticks out into the bevel at the place where I start and end the cut. I know that this is probably a technique problem but can't seem to figure out what to do differently.

I know this original posting is pretty old, but was hoping someone was still out there using this cutter.

Thks,
Patty

Hi Patty and welcome to the G.

This issue is part of the problem on any oval cutter that using a "trailing blade" design - where the blade follows slightly behind the leading edge of the tangent point. Carithers, C&H and older Starr-Springfield oval cutters all could display this issue.

Technique will help a bit -- lightly dragging the blade on the interior first and slowly pushing down on the handles to lower the blade into the mat board. A little bit of use of an Emery board following has been standard procedure for years.

The only machines known to track in exact position in creating ovals are the Gene Green Oval Cutter, Fletcher F-1000 and F-1100, and of course all CMC's.

Hope this information helps.

John
