I am being offered a Carithers Signature Oval Mat cutter for $75.
Problem is that it doesn't have a mat blade holder, just a glass cutter. Are the mat blade holders and blades for this unit still available anywhere? Are C&H parts interchangable with Carithers?

You'd probably be happier if you could find an Oval-Art mat cutter made by the late Gene Green. A whole lot esier to use, makes a perfect oval, slightly bigger than a bread box. Try Ebay or google. Call me if you wanna chat about this.

Hey Greg-

What would be a fair price for an Oval Art cutter?

Thanks Greg,
I think you're right, but I can't seem to find one anywhere. I think the Cornerstone cutter is the same as the Gene Green, but their number has been disconnected.

I've got one that I could sell- what is it worth?

We may have to move this over to the commerical posts section. Mods?

Rob,

A good question...

Oval cutters for cutting matboard and glass have gone by the wayside. In 2008 Fletcher-Terry discontinued their F-1100, about the same time that Keencut discontinued their Oval 6 machine. Just a few years earlier C&H discontinued their Oval Master. As mentioned above, the Gene Green Oval cutter is also defunct.

This leaves the Valiani manual oval cutter as the only professional oval cutter remaining on the market to my knowledge. Every manufacturer can attribute the popularity of CMC's to the declining sales numbers. Combine this with a shrinking market, and production didn't make a great deal of business sense.

The secondary market value of these manual oval cutters was also down dramatically, however that may have bottomed out. And now that any framer who doesn't own or have access to a CMC might contemplate buying a used cutter if in good condition.

So what's one worth... depends upon condition, model and how many oval mats/glass you need to cut. I'm glad I've still got one. IMHO, owning one actually makes more sense than owning a manual straight line cutter (As a CMC owner that is...)

John

Now ask me which one I think is the best and which ones I wouldn't give $25 to own? :D
