I have an 8 x 16 oil. Customer and I decided on a frame with a large fillet. This leaves very little to stretch around the bars. Is there any reason I can't build a strainer frame from liner stock, "finger stretch" the canvas and staple on the top of the strainer rather than on the side? I'm thinking the only possible problem is that I wouldn't be able to get the thing as tight as with canvas pliers?

I could sew more canvas to the sides but don't want to if I don't have to. (Do those stitches ever pull out while stretching? Obviously haven't ever tried it.)

Why not stretch like normal and build the fillet in to a liner? Just attach a block of wood to the underside of the fillet. This will allow you to have a rabbit and use normal fitting methods.
