I'm tired of pulling hair which I don't have and have run out of options for being a helping neighbor.

I have tried and tried to install several different versions of Adobe Acrobat without success. Even though the installation routine appears to successfully complete, all the application does is hang up with the hourglass when launched.

Acrobat 6.0, 5.0, 4.0 all do the same thing, whether installed from CD or from broadband download.

Windows 2000 is the operating system which has been updated within the past week. Problem appeared prior to operating system update, but after deleting a solar eclipse type of desktop background image. Part of the problem is a business owner allowing 9yr old to install & play unlimited number of games, unsupervised with company computer in the back room. Computer is open architecture.

No other problems have been observed with the computer.

Suggestions? Other than keep children from modifying things without permission? This same child was allowed to play, unsupervised, with a $7000 sewing machine based upon the Windows operating system. Needles moving 700 strokes per minute under software control and children don't mix.

It sounds as though something has been done to the operating system that should not have happened.

As a "Business Machine", the system is not a toy and should not be used by an unsupervised child of any age (3 to 60).

As a side bar question. Are the programs and data backed up?

Is it possible the document you're trying to open is just large or on a slow site? When I try to open PDFs on broadband, there is often a delay of up to 5 minutes before some of them appear.

I'm trying, but these folks are working very slowly on their computer system. No backups are available. I'm not even sure they can find the operating system cd. I had hoped that the windows update would catch operating system problems and perform magical repairs on the fly.

The pdf files are on the local harddrive, though I've waited over 45 minutes attempting to open 200kb online pdf with the broadband connection.

I'm still trying to convince the folks that plugging $20,000 worth of sewing machines into a single $35 surge protector is not the smartest thing to do.

TNX for re-affirming my suspicions.

If it's on the local hard drive it should come up almost immediately.

Have you tried completely UN-installing Adobe, and rebooting, before re-installing? This should reset everything.

Here are detailed instructions for the automatic uninstall, or the (better) manual uninstall:
Ver 5.1: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2e3ae.htm
Ver 5.0: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2a08a.htm
Ver 4.0 http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/1e9d6.htm

I suggest physically erasing the folder and rebooting before you attempt to reinstall it. I also suggest deleting the NP*.dll from your c:\Program Files/Internet Explorer/PLUGINS folder.

Another common reason for this program to fail is a conflict with video card drivers. It wouldn't hurt to contact your hardware vendor's web site and download the current version of the driver for your video card.

I hope some of this is helpful to get your problem fixed up...

Mike

TNX Mike,

I finally threw in the hat and told them to call in the big guns.

Everything tried to no avail. The video is on-board Intel.

I think this will serve as a second big lesson for why game playing on business computers can be a less than enjoyable experience for the person in charge of spending company funds. Move #1 was from a $7000 sewing machine to a $1000 computer. Maybe move #2 will be to a $50 nintendo
