Customer wants me to frame two large shadow puppets purchased in Cambodia. They are made of cut leather with lots of little holes (for the light to shine through).

Anybody have experience working with these that they would like to share? Pictures? Ideas?

If the fingers at the top of the photo are a fair indication of the size, those cut-leather artworks are larger than any similar things I've framed.

I would probably use 8 or 10 clear film straps, about 1/4" to 1/2" wide, over sturdy parts of the leather. You could use lots of straps of matching cotton thread, as well. However, avoid using synthetic thread, as that might be strong enough to cut the leather at its mounting points over time.

I'd also use UV-filtering acrylic, a generous spacer, and a mounting substrate of fluted polypropylene covered with non-buffered board or fabric washed/rinsed three times.

I forgot to mention size--this bad boy is about 34" at its widest and 40" tall. Customer choose an off-white Frank's Fabric that we plan to use as a float mat. She chose a gold frame that will have to be built up with a back box that we will construct.

I was planning on sewing to the matboard/substrate and will definitely add some mylar strips to that plan. It is a pretty sturdy piece right now, probably 1/16" thick leather. Was rolled in palm leaves for travel and very curly when she brought it but settling some after a week in the store between foam.

Would sure love to see some photos...the link above does not seem to be working.

I just framed one like that in a shadow box. I raised it up above the fabric backing using small blocks of black fome core in spots behind the puppet where I could hide the blocks so it floated above the backing.
The customer wants us now to put lights inside the frame because it is hanging in a dark corner in the house. We are looking at adding LED strip lights inside.
I haven't done this before.
