Hi,
I have a chance to get an M60 Advantage Pro Plus for a pretty good price. But as I search for reviews and info I can't find a manufacturers website or much discussion on them after about 2004. So a couple of questions: what is the manufacturers website?, is this still considered a good brand and model?, how does this compare to the Logan 850 (Chronomat)?
Fyi, I'm a photographer who frames my own work and not a pro custom framer. I've been using a Logan 650, but I have a hard time squaring it, having hooks in the cuts and generally think a higher quality cutter is what I need for the next 10 years.
All thoughts appreciated,

Logan are pretty much for hobbyist, a C+H or Fletcher are used by more professionals and you can't go wrong with either. The reason you won't find much info is because most of the matting done today is buy CMC's computer mat cutters.

Like RParrish said C&H and Fletcher are the two most used manual cutter by professionals today, though a few shops do use Logan. I use a CMC (computerized mat cutter) but have my Fletcher 2200 60" as a backup.
Search the Grumble for past post about the C&H - I know there are many and you will more than likely find out what you need to know. Also the following link is one about C&H by Nielsen Bainbridge (look in the Framers Corner drop down)

I have had my C&H for 14 years. It was a used purchase and I believe it was purchased used from the person who owned it before me. It is now in my home workshop and I really like that cutter. I also use a Fletcher at work, also an excellent cutter. I personally like my C&H. If I were purchasing one today and had a choice between C&H or Fletcher, all things being equal, it would not make a difference to me which one I ended up with. Logan would be my last choice. Like mentioned above, they are mainly a hobby cutter.
 
If memory serves, the original C&H cutters were designed and manufactured by Carithers (Charlie and Herb) out of Jackson, Mississippi.

They sold the rights to Bainbridge, I think, who started off with the same basic design, then through the years, tweaked it to where it is today.

There are several iterations of the C&H. I’m pretty sure that Bainbridge still supports the model.

You might try to contact Nielsen-Bainbridge as a starting point. They should be able to answer your questions and supply parts if needed, or, at least, direct you to someone who can.


BTW: my C&H 4060 is nearly 25 years old and still going strong. About the only repairs I’ve had to make in that time is to replace those short springs which break on rare occasions.

I can get a new Logan 855 (48 inch) for the same price I can get an excellent condition used C+H Pro Plus 60. Logan has always seemed to have good customer service which is a nice plus. When I go to the Nielsen-Bainbridge site I see a 2006 front page and still can't find a page for the Mat Cutters. That just makes me wonder about long term support or blade support.

Given that choice, and assuming that the Logan version of the Chronomat is as good as the Phaedra one, I'd go with the Logan. I'm a longtime C+H user (both straightline and wall cutter), but was close to purchasing a new Chronomat. Decided to get a CMC instead. Anyway, the Chronomat is a very nice machine. Having a warranty on a new machine is worth something too.

It all depends on your objective. I would buy the longer mat cutter if you think that the length would be of benefit. I have two C + H cutters - one made when 3M bought the brand and one from the original manufacturer. Both are excellent machines but the original machine has better metal. You should be able to purchase a 60" C+H for $400 or less.
 
I use a Chronomat at one job and a C+H Advantage Pro at another. I own a C+H Advantage Pro myself and have also used a Fletcher.
I prefer the C+H, it is rock solid and getting blades and parts is no problem. I recently got a replacement return spring for my own cutter which is 10 years old and this is the only part I have ever had to replace. It cost $3.00.
It's kind of like Ford versus Chevy, thin crust pizza versus deep dish. People like what they like and it's up to personal preference. :kaffeetrinker_2:
 
I use a CMC and have a Fletcher as a backup but over nearly 32 years have used about all of the cutters out there. If I needed a mat cutter and found a good deal on the C&H I would not hesitate for one second in buying it. I always preferred the feel of the C&H to the Fletcher but consider them mostly equal. I personally prefer the precision of the stop and start point of the blade on C&H without having to look down and around the cutting head like the Fletcher.
 
I used a c&h at my shop and have a speed mat at my house love em both. Used a Fletcher but just like the feel and the sturdiness of the c&h a little better.
 
Thanks to all for commenting. I won an ebay bid for a new C+H 60 pro advantage plus for $399 and $150 shipping. I'm pretty excited. Hopefully it will show up as described.

Great deal I picked up my 48 pro on ebay to (think I paid about what you paid little less shipping though but smaller cutter) Great machines very solid.
 
I know this is an old thread, but I need some help. I work at a museum and we have an old C+H advantage pro mat cutter that was stuck back in a corner unused for years. Now the department wants to get it going again to re-house some artwork. Because I used to be a full time picture framer in the past, I have been put in charge of getting this thing going. Everything is fine except the plate on the cutting head that holds the blade is slightly warped and it wont hold the blade. Does anyone know: A) where I can get a replacement part... I can't find any contact info or anything. I've only seen listings for used C&H cutters B) how to creatively fix this. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.
 
There is a offset screw in the opposite end that the blades goes in. Try loosening the blade screw, turn the opposite screw clockwise and re-insert the blade. A couple of quick adjustments should fix the problem.

There are not offset screws on this one. It has two small hex-drive machine screws that hold the plate onto the suttle and the giant knob on the opposite side(upper right) that is supposed to tighten the blade, but doesn't.
 
Well......I kind of feel like a dummy, but I would still like to track down a replacement part. I realized I was part of the problem of why the blades were not holding. There is a youtube video talking about the maintenance of this machine and the person doing the demo emphasizes not over tightening these screws. So after i loosened the screws a bit, the cutter is up and running. I already cleaned and squared it all up yesterday, so this was the final step.

Again, if anyone knows where I can find replacement parts, I would still appreciate it.

Yep, those are the ones.
 
The guy who knows more about C+H equipment than anyone else is Gritsko JohnKlein. He worked for C+H for many years, but now works for M&M Framing Supplies. (At least he did before they were bought by Omega... as far as I know he still does.) They may have parts. Also, United Mfrs. Supplies used to carry parts, so you could check with them.

You can order some of the parts from Larson Juhl thru their tech line.
I replaced the blade holder that was bent on an older C+H cutter that I fixed for someone about a year ago and the part was about $25.
Unfortunately some people like to use a pliers on the big thumbscrew on the blade holder.:shutup:
 
Also get the United catalog. It used to have an exploded view of the cutter complete woth part numbers. You can get the parts also from United.

Larry has a page on his site, linked to in his signature, that has a lot of manuals that will have part numbers and maintenance tips. I think you may have a c&h 4060 not a matpro advantage.... If a matpro then repairing and getting up to snuff shpuld be relatively easy. Refer to Larry's manual page and download the right pdf files.

I'm kind of late to the thread, but i just ordered a replacement part for my C&H from my local distributor, Colorado Moulding, that carries Nielsen Bainbridge.. I also could have ordered it direct.
 
Looking for glass & plexiglass cartridges & wheels/blades for C&H Advantage Pro

Hi, I recently got a C&H Advantage Pro G-60 for a really good deal, except that it didn't come with glass or plexiglass cartridges.
Before I contact a distributor, I thought I'd see if anybody has extra parts they would sell me.

I am a hobbist so I don't see myself using the machine enough to order glass wheels or plexiglass blades in a quantity of 10 which seems to be how they come.

I am looking for the following parts:

Glass Cartridge G0191 x1
Glass wheel G0237, x2 or x3
PlexiGlass Cartridge G0261 x1
Plexi Blade G0235 x2
Plexi Screw G0251 X1

My C&H 48” Advantage mat cutter head wobbles. I don’t know how to make it stop that. I’ve cut many mats on this table cutter, I Love it, until it started cutting inconsistent mat inserts and mats in general. As I pull toward me the cut gets wider. Very frustrating! Any help appreciated!

The C+H cutters were built by a company called Atscott. You can try to check with them, but their remaining stock of parts is very sparse at this point.

curious if anyone has any leads on where to get the oillite bronze bushings for the cutting block for an c+h advantage m48? looked high and low, no dice
 
Glad that worked out for you. The C+H machines are nice, but they have been discontinued for quite a while, so there are few parts left. Glad they had what you need.
