Hey guys, Im doing some framing and I was wondering your opinions. Im framing some posters 27x41 and, I was wondering what you would use as a backing board. My framer guy told me to use, Artcare foam board, BUT I feel a little worried over the outgassing. I was thinking crescent 100% rag.
Any opinions

Dave,

I hate to tell ya this, but Artcare foamboard is a conservation foamboard that actually absorbs outgassing and foreign pollutants in a frame package using a new technology that involves the use of zeolites. (You can Google that term to learn more about it.)

If you want to use a foam core backing, that would be one of the best to consider.

If it is a filler type backing with no direct contact to the posters, I would consider using plastic corrugated board.

You said nothing about the value of the posters, but I recognize those as the dimensions of movie posters. If they are collectible or vintage posters of significant value, then I suggest mounting them Japanese paper/starch paste hinging, or full-length edge supports, to 4-ply alphacellulose (including cotton rag), buffered.

Attach the 4-ply board to a reinforcing board of 4 mm or thicker fluted polypropylene. Acrylic medium or gell, or Lascaux 360 contact adhesive would be good for the purpose, or you could use strips of 3M #889 double sided tape. You can buy "Archival Coroplast" from any Bainbridge matboard distributor.

If the posters are not collectible, then I would mount them directly to ArtCare foam center board, using a non-invasive method, such as described above..
