Well, I saw my surgeon today and he's repairing my abdominal hernia on March 30th. He believes it can be handled outpatient overnight but also may have to cut me 6" with a 3-4 day stay. Of course, that's just the beginning because there'll be no jumping up and down on the chopper or v nailer, no lifting, etc., etc. for 6-8 weeks while I heal. Has anyone out there been through a similar business interruption successfully? I only plan to be away for a couple days and I just wonder if there's more to prepare for and I'm not seeing the whole picture.

March 5th, 1989, kissed a truck.

Returned to light duty 1991.

In '93 they fixed my hernia and five days later I was back framing....don't remember any restrictions.... but then, we were using a lot of Unseal in those days....

Ah, unseal! I just know I've got a can of that here somewhere!

Abdominal hernia ......... I’ve been there and done that.

You will need someone to cover the store.

I was discharged the same day with a bottle of pain pills. Two days latter Doug the martyr went to work for a couple of hours and it was a big mistake. Just getting in and out the Van was painful and set me back for a couple of days. Any activity in the first two or three days will be counterproductive.

I have good crew and they did fine.

You should be able to walk around and talk to other humans after four or five days.

I would not plan to do anything related to production for at least 10 days.

Good Luck
Doug

I was supposed to be in the same situation a year ago but was able to avoid for the time being... it may still happen in the not too distant future... It is always on my mind and in my thoughts, especially when we talk about our business plan.

This is a time when you wished you had critical illness insurance. That kind of insurance would pay for an employee to handle any work load you can't do or the extra money you would spend on having a wholesaler do your framing for you.

I've never heard of that kind of insurance. Guess I need to have a talk with my agent.

I just returned today from surgery on March 3.
Take the time off your body needs to heal. I had friends sit at the shop. They just took notes and brought them to me at night. They told them I was recovering from surgery and I would call. I called the customers in the evening and they all told me to get well and they didn't want me rushing back. This is the first time I didn't run back to the shop and feel as though I'm ready for anything. I'm not going to do any heavy lifting for at least another week. Good Luck

Colleen - Yours is a terrific idea! Having friends "shop sit" and take notes! I think that idea will do me very well when I have my cataract surgery in June! Thanks for that!!! At least that way someone would be at the shop for those all important pick-ups and payments!

A similar business interruption? Sure. Imagine a framer with one arm paralized from shoulder to elbow, and another almost as useless. I was out of work for weeks, and even when I was able to return, could do little. Even now, over two years later, I'm not anywhere near as strong as I used to be, and have some discomfort in my shoulders. I don't dare lift anything large or heavy.

This is one of the reasons I would give as to why I sold my business. The long hours killed my neck and shoulders.

If you have good help, you'll get by. My customers were wonderful. People will understand.

Oh, yeah. Two things you have going for you.

You have some time to plan for your absence.

This is not the holiday season.

Sometimes this is not the case.
