Drive wire nails into them. (The kind that you use for saw-tooth hangers) You can buy a box from United. #1920

For larger pieces buy an assortment of sizes of the type with screws from your local hardware store.I wish United would sell those.

United does sell rubber bumper tacks. I'm going to try those next. #1833

I'm going to assume that there was a post prior to that about bump-ons falling off..?
I've never heard of anyone nailing them onto the back of the frame!!!
Incidentally, we use 3M bumpons, they stay 'on' unless we bump 'em ! ;)

I nail 'em on all the time, cause they DO fall off, especially on larger frames. I use bress escutcheon pins and sink the little round head below the surface. I too wish United would sell those large tack bumpers in huge quantities. You can only get tiny amounts at the hardware store.

I use the clear 3M bumpons, rounded and flat, and the rounded ones never fall off metal frames, just the flat rounds off of paper-backed wood frames...

I order the 3M bumpons from United, item # 3970. They're the extra tall ones for metal frames. I use them on metal AND wood frames. I've NEVER had one come off yet. When I have messed up, and had to reopen a job I closed, the bumpon will pull the backing paper off!

I like 'em, I love 'em, I need more OF 'em!!

PS: United has the Bumper-tacks at $4.60/gross and $28.00/1000. But y'all probably already knew that...I may order a gross myself, just to see the difference.

I have not had ANY returns of framing in 13 years for bumpons that have fallen off! I have knocked them off already when packing some framed art for a show but that usually was caused by my own impatience in sliding them into a container or into the back of a van to transport them.

Nailing on a bumpon seems rather redundant to me. Maybe ATG'ing mats together would work better if we also used thumbtacks through the mats! :D

Of course a bumpon will come off if the frame package is mishandled. But, under normal circumstances, I doubt that there are many bumpons that just "fall" off of the back of a frame. Granted, you may get a batch with faulty adhesive, but I don't think that nailing on bumpons will make our lives in the frame shop all that much more enjoyable.

I personallu use only 5/8" felt pads I have ordered numerous times from Larson Juhl. I only use the rubber bumpons from 3M on metal frames. I find that the rubber bumpons adhere better to the metal than they do to the paper, and I was also constantly knocking the bumpons off the wood frames. I find that the felt pad does the job, and is less bulky on a wood frame, so it gets knocked off less.
