Hi there !
Have only just registered so don't really know for sure whether I'm using the site properly so apologies in advance if not.
Anyway I wonder if anyone has any ideas that could help me with a framing problem. I have two fairly valuable prints I am framing for a friend. They are approx 70cmX55cm and are on paper although quite thick. One is ok but the other one is more than somewhat buckled/warped and will not lie flat whatever I try. I am using a double mount (probably not relevant, I suppose) So even when the weight of the glass is pressing down on to the mount it is still not flat eg you can see several gaps under one edge of the mount which doesn't look too cool. There are about 8 cms of unused background surrounding the actual artwork on the print which I was thinking of cutting off but don't really want to do that as the artwork is fairly valuable and I'm not sure whether it would help anyway. I was also thinking of somehow putting in some kind of buffer between the artwork and the mount to kind of create a gap between them.
Has anyone out there come across a similar problem and/or could advise as to possible solutions ? Or maybe there isn't one. I think the prints were bought some years ago so returning them to the vendor isn't an option !

Since these are valuable works, they should not be cut period. If they are to be flattened, that should be done by a paper conservator, since it involves risks that a framer is unwise in assuming. If the sheets are put in a good quality paper folder and left in a stack of paper, under gentle pressure for some months, the paper may begin to flatten, somewhat without more invasive treatment.

tedholt... welcome to the Grumble!

You are at the right place to ask such questions and the response above is from one of our most knowledgeable and respected Grumblers.

Hugh is a premier art conservator and you can trust his advise explicitly. We are fortunate to have him here.

Enjoy your travels on the Grumble but be careful... it is addicting!

Thanks, Hugh
Not sure what "Reply with quote" is although could have added "Friends, Romans and Countrymen" as a tiltle but have gone for the safer quick reply instead.
Thanks for taking the time to send me some suggestions. I did try to flatten for around 3 months it under some mountboard with a few books on top which made zero differnece. I will try in one of the professional shops locally and see if they can do anything with it along the lines you suggest.

Hi Ted and welcome.

If you go to any post and hit the Quote button underneath it, it will quote that post in your reply. Just like I did here.

Paper is rarely flat and sometimes it buckles from the printing process or it can be caused by poor framing. I would recommend you and your client live with it if the buckling was not caused by a previous framing job.
