I am looking for suppliers that specialize in brass engraved and laser name plates for art work. I can only seem to find Brasso engraving supply, but have not had much luck in contacting someone to get a catalog. Do you know of any alternate resources I could try?

The price from the local trophy shop is often less than just the shipping from the big guys, and takes about a day.

Most of them can do the engraved plates or the laser printed (less expensive) plates.

It might be worth considering. There are web companies that do this too, but this will mean shipping and a greater delay.

Some of the national ones that will ship to framers:

Awards and Presentations (800-452-1052)
Sign Design Custom Products, Inc. (WI) (800-274-9161) www.signdesign.org
Brassco Engraving in Dallas www.brassco.com
Signs by Paul in Colorado (303-697-8003)
Quality House Engraving in Monroe, WI. (608-328-8381)
Village Brass Afton, Mn. (800-235-8067)
Greenwood Engraving, Boyertown, PA (610-473-7886)

I use signs by Gwynn in Wichita Falls, TX.

Phone 940-322-2565.

Very reasonable and good quality work. Nice folks too.

I highly recommend Greenwood Engraving. (610-489-0130) Manya is a great person to work with

Mostly because you never really have to to anything other than fax in the form. It's like clockwork with her.

Manya - if you're listening, that plate I got this morning was beautiful and it's hanging on the customers wall already. TX!

We use the "local trophy shop" when its time-urgent, but much prefer the quality and appearance from

Quality House Engraving in Monroe, WI. (608-328-8381)

Lots of standard options to choose from or custom designed plates, no more expensive than the tropy shop, recieve them in about a week by US Mail (no shipping charge).

Slick, I'd follow Mike's first lead. If you have a trophy place close by, make friends. Some even have layed out that $35K for a laser burner.

My guy, I've had to train a bit on the laser because he didn't get what I was doing when I would occationally want it deeper and "bolder", because I was gessoing and clay for gold leaf. But when I've done wood plates for wood frames, WOW!

Good luck.

I would recommend Sign Design Custom Products, Inc. (WI) (800-274-9161). I have used them for years. They give great service. The have a really nice sample piece for counter display. I also liked the fact that they do not charge by the letter. They charge by the size of the piece. Another good thing is that they ship USPS and do not charge for shipping. However, if you prefer UPS, they will ship UPS but pass those charges on to you.

Thanks for all the info. Someone asked how to attach the plates to suede. The plates have adheive on the back, do you need to cut the material away from the mat before adhereing? Or will the adhesive stick to the suede? Good question

Good question Jay.

If the suede it real suede (leather) or even suede cloth (combed cotton thats been fulled) any of the fine fabric glues such as Frank's Fabric adhesive will work. First clean back of plate with alcohol or acetone (finger nail polish remover). Rub a bit of adhesive into the suede and a thin coat on the back of the metal plate. Let dry. (if you're daring, you can carefully iron the plate on at this time)or: Apply a thin coat to each once again, and almost let dry. Stick together under a weight and allow to dry over night.

There are those who will tell you that these kinds of glue ONLY work on poreous surfaces. Stick you fingers in you ears and fly like a bumblebee. (Their wings are too small to fly).
The shear strenghth is increadible. And when we are dealing with a metal plate of under 3 grams, how much stick do you need.

BUT. If it's on "suede board". Well all bets are off and you'll have to attach with a minimum of 2 ozs of Volkem, 6-16penny green epoxy sinker framing nails, 9 2-1/2" galvinized deck screws and an acetilen torch.

Just joking about the Volkem.

Does "Quality House Engraving" have a web site or e mail address that you know of? (I did a search, but couldn't find either.)

Jay

The plates I get from my supplier comes with a double stick tape of some kind that bonds to anything. I have been using them for years on suede and never have had one to fail. I can ask what kind of tape he is using, I'm sure it is something we can get.
