Hi,

I run an art print company and am looking to start framing the prints we sell (rather than sending them out to be framed). I hired a young junior framer to help me get started, and he talked me into purchasing a Chinese knockoff of the U-300 from eBay (and then quit with one day's notice a few weeks later). I can get it to fire v-nails successfully about 30% of the time but, after a few successful attempts, just as my confidence begins to build, the hammer starts to catch on the v-nail firing head and totally misfires. I've attempted adjusting the track, etc. to try and deal with this and have had rather limited success.

In a moment of frustration, I found on Craigslist that someone near me had posted a Fletcher Corner Pro 5600 for sale for $850. He is a liquidator so didn't have any info on the machine, but it seemed in fairly good condition and that seemed like a pretty good price (I think?). However, when we went to try it out together, we found that the pedal doesn't seem to work at all (though the rest of the underpinner, pressure gauge, etc., all seems to generally engage once the pneumatic hose is placed). This machine has sat for quite some time in a garage since the liquidator acquired it. I've given a deposit to the seller and taken the machine to try and get it working, with the agreement that he'd drop the final price by whatever it costs me to get it working again, or return it for a refund if I can't.

When I called Fletcher to see if they could help me troubleshoot or recommend some technician that I could have out to try and diagnose or fix the machine, the support person I spoke said that it had been way too long since they sold that machine and they couldn't suggest any solutions or people that might help, and asserted that they didn't sell replacement parts for it. As best as I can tell from Google, I may just need to swap out the pedal or pedal valve, or maybe the hoses just need to be cleaned out?

I'm hoping you framing experts can give me some advice on what I should do now with my two nonfunctional underpinners. Is the Fletcher machine worth fixing and, if so, should I try and hire a technician (from a pneumatic equipment repair place? somewhere else?) or just trust that its just that the pedal or valve is no good and try and find a replacement part online? Or do I return the Fletcher machine to the seller and focus on getting my knock-off U-300 working better? (And any tips on fixing my problem with the hammer catching?) Or do I just give up on both and try to buy something I can count on more reliably and, if so, any recommendations? I'm hoping to be able to frame about 80-100 frames a week, and I'd love to get my operation up and running in the next two weeks or so.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice anyone can provide! If at all helpful, I'd be glad to add any photos of either or both of the machines.

Hello, Cosmo and welcome to the Grumble.
I'm a 55 year picture framer and I'm working in Tempe.
If I was looking for equipment I would contact Steve at https://aimequipmentcompany.com/ Home
They can also help with equipment support and parts issues.

Welcome to the Grumble!

I am not familiar with that model, but most vnailers are similar. Some valves that drive pistons.

You are showing air pressure on the gauge, I assume? The knob can likely be pulled out slightly, turned, and pushed back in to lock; if you wish to adjust the pressure for various types of wood density. I would try it at about 100 to start out.

Do you have access to the manufacturers user manual for your 5600? If not, we have a copy of it in our document library at:

The manual has some detailed operating instructions, periodic maintenance steps, troubleshooting instructions, and parts list, if that might be of use.

Best regards,
Mike

If you are looking to get something working quickly (a week), I would recommend starting with something that you know works.
In that case I would recommend starting with a new machine, as trouble shooting a machine can take a bit of back and forth on ordering parts, waiting, installing, and seeing if that fixes the problem.
I find that having a backup machine is a good idea, as if something goes wrong, it may take a few weeks to troubleshoot, and get parts.
It sounds like all you need is a replacement foot pedal for the Fletcher, but once you get that working there could be other problems. As Fletcher doesn't make it any more, getting those parts could be an issue.
The problem with your original Chinese tool may be as simple as incorrect V-Nails. Did you get those with the machine? Sometimes Nails from another vendor that claim to work in the machine will cause more problems than they are worth in savings.

A tool like this can work in a pinch, while you are waitng on the correct solution: https://www.amazon.com/meite-Nailer...2&psc=1&mcid=c444fbd048ec32a7a7d48665bf8415c8

Best of luck,

He may be right. Hopefully, the Chinese maker provided an Instruction Manual that specifies the type of V-nail to use in that machine. They are probably "Universal" V-nails, 10.3 mm or 11 mm in size, which are readily available. If you are confident that you are using the correct V-nail size, maybe it would help to try a different V-nail brand of the same size - they're not always "universally" compatible.

The Fletcher 5600 underpinner was made in Italy by Pilm, and name-branded for the Fletcher Business Group for several years. That relationship was terminated when Fletcher acquired Alfamacchine in Italy, the maker of the current line of Fletcher/AMP machines and a competitor to Pilm.

If all you need is a foot pedal, maybe you could use a generic/universal foot pedal available from a source of pneumatic parts. Grumble member "Underpinner Spares" may be able to help you troubleshoot this machine's issues and provide the parts you need economically from his UK location.

Fletcher/AMP has foot pedals, too. This is the one used for the VN2+1, which functions similarly to the Fletcher 5600. Maybe it would work, but I'm not sure:

AIM Equipment Company is a distributor for the Pilm underpinners currently available, and may be able to provide the parts you need for this machine.

Sincere thanks all for lot of great suggestions here. I reached out to AIM and they are supposed to get back to me on possible parts / repair, or alternate machines if I can't get this working. I did end up trying to hook up the pedal from the knock-off U-300 to the Fletcher 5600 machine since they both appeared to have the same mechanisms (three hoses labeled A, B and P), hoping that that would at least confirm that I've just got a pedal problem with my Fletcher machine, but that pedal likewise seemed to have no effect on the machine. This does have me a bit worried that perhaps what is wrong with the machine is more than just a faulty pedal.

On the Chinese machine, I haven't really been using the v-nails that came with the machine as they are loose individual v-nails and I'm finding them very hard to line up and get properly loaded. So I've been principally using the 10mm Alfamacchine AMP Genuine Power Twist V-Nail Joint Fasteners. But maybe I ought to try a different brand or size v-nail.

Thanks again.

All of my V-Nailing experience is on AMP machines.
I have had problems using non-AMP V-Nails on AMP machines, even when the vendor says they are the correct product.
Try looking for some "Universal" V-Nails, and see if that helps.

Fletcher Corner Pro 5600 has a knob that keeps the post pedal pressure locked in , we used this machine from mass productiona nd never had issues for 5 years, run some air hose oil tot he lines too
