When logged in on the Grumble, ordinarily the names of threads containing new posts since my last viewing appear in bold. After reading, they revert to standard type. This is true even if I finish reading the thread and then just use my Back button to return to the forum page. However, on my one Mac that is still running the Tiger OS I recently upgraded to Safari 4.1, and now I notice that the thread names remain bold even after I have read them when using the back button to return to the forum main page. They only change if I post something and then go back to the forum page through the Go button at the bottom.

This isn't a big problem, but it's a little inconvenient. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a different browser?

As far as I know: The forum doesn't adjust anything based on which client or operating system version you are using. The way different browsers (and versions) interpret things may vary, however.

I'm thinking it may be a glitch in that version of Safari. I figured Peter Odems, our resident Mac guru, might chime in with some insight.

There are some other hinkey stuff with TG, too.

For me, in both FireFox and Safari (Mac OS 10.4), the post headers return to plain text from bold once I click on the site, but in some headers the text is italicized (both bold and plain text), but, only on the Grumble main forum, and only some of the posts. It doesn’t seem to matter whether I have clicked on the threads or not.

Most peculiar.

When you use the back-button you will see the previous page as you did before..... With some actions, like posting, and you should use that button direct after posting, you get a blank page. So back is really back with a Mac. ;)

Remember that 10.4 is running an older version of Safari. (4.x) The recent Grumble software is from later. If you can update to 10.5 you can run Safari 5 with the fine extensions and being uptodate again. ;)

Tiger is an older version of the Mac OS. So if your computer can't handle Snow Leopard or the newest one, is it Lion? then maybe it could be a hardware issue. ie is the monitor a 14" CRT? :) Or is the screen resolution kinda old/outdated? 8000 by 600 maybe?

Just thinking that maybe instead of a software or OS tweak it might just be an old technology conundrum. Kinda like playing LPs in your bluray, it just ain't gonna happen :)

If the computer and hardware can handle Snow Leopard why not upgrade? It's really only $40, plus ram.

Sometimes you have to be careful. Printers are working well with 10.4 and after updating to 10.5 you can get the problem that the printer-manufacturer did never made a 10.5-targeted driver for that printer. So be careful.
If you get that problem you can finally try Print-Gimp.....

I have a Cube G4 1.25 GHz and runs 10.5 much faster than 10.4. But now I have to use my old Pismo Powerbook G4/500 as a backstage printserver. We all print through that Powerbook over here.....

The italicized type on TG doesn’t bother me too much, it’s just an oddity.

I’m stuck in the dark ages with “Tiger” (10.4.something) because I still need access to OS 9 (Mac G4). I have an Epson 13” x 19” flatbed scanner and a Nikon slide scanner that have drivers that were written for OS 9 but haven’t been updated for OS X. There are no GIMP drivers that I can find, either.

And, because of the hardware that is on the G4, I can’t ever upgrade to anything higher than 10.4. My trusty “Clyde” has been limping along on crutches since 2003.

Not sure what kind of a G4/G5 you have. But you can run 10.5 and OS9 together without any problem. The best way is to split your harddisk into 2 parts, before installing. You can even run all 3 systems with 3 parts. But yes, printing can be a bottleneck, unless you use an other Mac as a printserver, which is simply arranged in the prefs.

I have two Mac Minis with Snow Leopard. This, however, is a trusty old ball-base G4 iMac. Tiger (OS 10.4.11) is the newest OS* it will run. I only recently updated to Safari 4.1 because I was unable to access my Hotmail account with the older version. The older version, however, did give me the non-bold thread titles on the Grumble when I used my back button. I guess it's just a difference in the code on version 4.1.

*that will still run Classic, which I very occasionally do

All Mac's with a 1GHz CPU (G4+) can run Leopard 10.5

When you have an older model with 800 MHz, you'r in bad luck....

I think you better use the "Go"-button after reading/posting in a topic.

After posting, the text changes as expected. When just reading, the thing I like about the back button (actually, cmd-[ ) is that it takes you back to the same position on the list where you left off.

Yes. It is all cached and tricky. Better use the "Go" button from the Grumble.
