A framer friend of mine who is not a Grumbler has approximately 20 yds on a 60" roll of black Veltex (the velcro wall covering for sample walls) It's left over from re-doing his wall. His cost was $10.50/yd and will sell for the same price. Plus shipping. He is willing to cut it up. You can contact me here or him (John) directly at 508-405-1792.

Hang onto it...

Harry,

You might want to suggest to your friend to hold onto that extra fabric.

IMHO, I think that Veltex has the cleanest look for framing sample display, however it will wear out - My experience is that it has a "framer shelf life" of about 6-10 years depending upon use.

I have used Veltex fabric since 1978 and have recovered units about 5-6 times.

If that is the fabric with the loopy front and the foamy on the back - the foam goes allofasudden and you walk in one morning and all yer corner samples are just dangling like participles.

That just happened to me. After 15 years, the fabric on all three of my sliding panels fell off (one went in the middle of the night and I came in to all the samples on the floor). Luckily it didn't happen to my large sample wall because the fabric was wrapped/anchored around the backing boards so even if the foam went south, the fabric was still up.

Actually......No

Mar,

Your example sounds like the material failing or the adhesive that you mounted the fabric to the substrate failing. That's really not what I'm talking about. If you use a strong ahesive mounted correctly the fabric should not pull away from the wall or substrate.

I'm talking about the veltex pile fabric "wearing out" where the hook from the corner samples simply does not "grab" the Veltex loop any longer and falls. The fabric will lose it's bite after years of use.

Actually I believe the Velcro fabric has changed from when I first bought it 27 years ago. The stuff that failed has a thin foam backing, and even though it was very securely glued with rolled out white glue, one day the foam just disintegrated and the fabric fell off the plywood panels, corner samples attached. It was quite a sight to behold! Very Dali-esque.

The stuff I have now was also glued firmly into place about 10-15 years ago and my plan, if the loopy pile ever starts flattening too much, is to move all the samples over to one side or the other about an inch! I don't think this stuff has any foam on the back of it, just a nice thick fabric and by this time I do believe I had used fabric adhesive. It is firmly attached!

Watch, I'll go into the shop tomorrow and everything will be dripping down the walls. Sorry for the Frankenthread.

Carry on.
