Black Frames and Putty

I have found that alot of the black frames from Roma and other companies have a dull finish on them. When I putty the frames the putty leaves a grease spot on the frame after I wipe it away. I have tired cleaning it with so many products but the grease stays there and the finish seems to get smudgy. Anyone have trouble with this? What are you cleaning the frame with? It's making me crazy trying to figure out a way to keep the finish clean looking. Help!

beeswax finish?

It could be that the finish is beeswax, in which case it will burnish and get shiny with any kind of wiping. If it feels slightly sticky or tacky to the touch, it's probaby beeswax (plus you can call Roma and check).

I have a lot of frames finished that way and I've been told that using a hair dryer (don't have a heat setting suggestion though) on the spot will remove the shine by softening the beeswax again.

Roma is most defiantly beeswax and I also use a heat gun on low setting.

I also keep a can of Claphams Beeswax on hand. Great stuff!

I find that it is better to use acrylic paint to do touch ups as opposed to putty. I hate putty.

Here is a trick to make putty set up hard. Heat it with a heat gun to flash off the solvents. When it cools, it will set up.

in case it is not the beeswax finish you are dealing with and that really common satin black I will share my trick:

I swipe the shiny spot with a little oil from my skin (usually my forehead or nose). It will be extra shiny and greasy looking but it sort of bonds with the putty grease and I can then clean it off with my glass cleaner. I know it sounds crazy (and gross) but I have been doing it this way for years.

Wouldn't earwax be more compatible with the beeswax?

If it's a non-beeswax - like a normal inexpensive flat-black finish, I simply (after wiping the first time) use hot-breath and wipe again. It seems to wipe any excess off immediately off black frames. Be careful not to wipe too much, as that will make that area become shiny.
