Hays, Kansas,
Hi everyone! Had a phone call from the local VFW Post, they are going to remount the flag in their VFW hall, and asked if I could find a mounting board, noo problem, what size? 96" X 60" OK, that, might pose a small problem. So, is there anyone who has board that size? I saw the aluminum sandwich board at the WCAF, but I suspect they have something, much, much, cheaper in mind. I would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations. Oh, they are going to build their own frame and put glass on it ( I did suggest acrylic, with little sucess) Thanks ahead of time!! Randy J.

I think you can get 48x96 foamboard, but you'll probably have to do some splicing. This sounds like a case for piecing together the board, and then wrapping it with fabric to make it look like one sheet. Good luck with that!

look into gatorboard ( sign suppliers have huge sheets available. )

A key question ... how are they planning to mount this flag to the board?

An easy method might be to stretch canvas over a cross braced strainer; sew the flag to the canvas.

All the materials are cheap enough if they are on a budget.

Going to be a heavy sucker if they use 1/4" glass! Yikes!

Rising has matboards in 60 by 104, but I can't remember what size I got the fome board in for that job! I don't recall splicing, but I do remember that cutting the plexi was a nightmare as it was too big for my F3000, the one thing I forgot to take into account :)

Hi Randy! Is this the VFW in Hays? Spent many an evening in that place. Is the etched VFW logo still in the door that goes to the kitchen? Did that etching in the 80's.

I agree with Andrew's idea of stretching canvas or muslin over a cross braced strainer; sew the flag to the canvas. You can make the covered strainer a bit larger than the flag and attach the acrylic directly to the strainer.

Ps. If you're working with the Auxiliary President, Debbie, tell her hello for me.

Gator comes 60 x- . Fome cor comes 60 x -

For something that large, we would make a strainer with at least one cross support and attach the gator to it. We usually make a fabric covered platform over gator and sew the flag to it.

We would also use a minimum of 3/16" thick acrylic. Glass that size is trouble looking for a place to happen.

Coroplast comes that large. If they don't want to spend the money on Coroplast then you could use the sign makers version of Coroplast and use cotton slip sheets behind it to protect the flag. The Micro fasteners work really well on flags and they will anchor inside the board. If you color match them and run them along the stitch line, they look like a stitch. Just a thought for a way to do it if they don't want to spend too much.
