Hi,

I'm hoping to open a new framers soon and I was wondering if anyone could suggest any good sources for learning more about best practices, particularly when it comes to mounting techniques. I've got several years experience working in a few different framers and, while they were good, I'm aware that we did some things that weren't ideal and some things were a little less than perfect.

I'd really like to aim high in terms of quality and workmanship, so if anyone has any suggestions for books, videos, even courses, I'd really appreciate it.

Editing to add: I'm in Ireland and I've just discovered the Fine Art Trade Guild in the UK, which looks like a great resource.

You may find courses offered by ICON. I see there is nothing listed at the moment so you might consider writing to see if something is in the planning. There is a pdf, Care and conservation of art on paper, under resources, then go to caring for your treasures and you will see it listed. It has good base information on how a work on paper should be framed. I'll put up some more links to books that I have found useful as a conservation framer. https://www.icon.org.uk/ Icon - The Institute of Conservation

Welcome to the G. 😁

The one thing you should think about when framing things: Can you take it out of the frame and not be able to
tell that it had ever been in one.

Of course this ideal is not always possible or necessary. It depends on the nature of the item. For original art
and valuable prints it very much is necessary. 😉

Thanks!

Ya the most recent place I worked at we did a wide variety of stuff. We were pretty good with original/valuable work, but there are definitely areas I'd like to improve on. I'm mostly looking for things that I might've overlooked, or not even thought of. This place is a godsend!

This is great, thank you.
