My Dell laptop at home bit the dust ( motherboard ).

What is then best deal out there for a replacement that is good VALUE ( not the cheapest ) for the money?

Suggestions ???

If you want a Dell, I recommend browsing the Small Business laptops for the best instant savings. It usually changes every few days. There are some Latitudes today going for $350+ off - customize from there. The low end Vostros are not showing comparable percentage discounts today.

Right now the office supply stores like Office Max, Office Depot and Staples offer some huge savings. I just looked at Office Depot which is where I bought 2 HP's last year at huge savings and they have some great deals again this year.

So much of it comes down to what you are really looking for in a laptop. If you buy an HP and leave the HP Advisor turned on it will always function as you hope. Every person who has told me of problems they have had with HP has turned the Advisor off. It takes a couple of extra seconds to start with it on but updates everything as needed.

Office Depot currently has a large number of laptops in the $400-$500 range after savings (most instant w/ only $50 mail in) right now. The 2 HP's I bought last year ran $425 each and were originally $800 prior to savings in instant and mail in rebates. They carry many brands so you can choose the brand you like and the configurations you are needing.

Not a great time to buy. It feels like Dell raises their prices so that they can lower them for Black Friday.

I got a Vostro 1440 with 2 gig of ram and with Win7 Pro 64 bit for 400- 450. Then added 8 gig of ram myself. Got the ram straight from Crucial on line for under $60, free shipping.

Got my kids the Vostro 1014's for $400 each. Again went low in the configured ram and added it for small money from Crucial.

FWIW the screen on the 1014 is better than the screen on the 1440 :)
