"Bee" Readymade Frame Question

In researching to help a friend put together a new shop I've been viewing a lot of readymades. Can someone tell me why both
(different manufacturers) of the ornate gold frame with the bumble bee motif have holes drilled in all 4 corners? What's this about??

Kendall Hartcraft is one. They are online at Kendallhartcraf.com, but it doesn't show any close ups. It's merely a whole drilled in each corner. Perhaps at one time in history this was used for cording to use to hang the picture? The other place I saw it was at a small wholesaler here in Nashville who doesn't have a website. In looking through fine, ornate readymades on-line I did see mention of the holes as part of the frame design. Wish I had made a note of where I had gone so I could ask them. So far, no one has an answer! Sorry, I (duh) don't know how to post a picture. Thanks for trying to help!
