Do you seal fabric liners with barrier tape... when the liner rabbit is what comes in contact with the art?

I've been using Rafael's liners which are primed before being covered with fabric. The wood beneath appears to be particle board or press wood.

I couldn't find the answer to this in the archives.

It's a good idea to at least pay some attention to the state of the rabbet where it comes into contact with a painting. Some rabbet can have lumpy bits along the sight edge and even fragments of loose leaf. I've seen bits of gold and hard lines permanently impinged into the edges of oil paintings. Sometimes even chunks of paint left sticking to the rabbet.

If the rabbet is smooth, then silicone-backed tape is good. If it's rough, running a sanding block along the underside is a good move. On paintings with a heavy impasto surface some form of foam tape such as Volara will help.

I've never seen any bad effects from nasty stuff from the wood itself migrating into a painting. That's not to say it can't happen.

Paper art is a different matter though. Aluminium tape is the stuff. With a strip of 2-ply rag on top preferably.

Wood rabbets can be sealed with heat sealing foils, like Marvelseal 360 or Aluminized Polyester, which can be installed with heat alone. The advantage of this technique is the fact that it eliminates the use of pressrue-sensitive adhesive, which can ooze over time.

Hugh - I looked at the Marvelseal 360 data sheet at Talas, but couldn't find my answer. You say this can be "installed with heat alone"...so how is this? From what I see, there's no heat-activated adhesive on the product. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! Jeremy
