Frames & Fabric, For Fun & Profit
Featuring Baer Charlton, CPF
Baer Charlton, CPF, of Charlton Productions, is an internationally recognized award winning framer who has lectured on, and taught many aspects of framing in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Central & North America and even lecturing on the high seas Mid-Atlantic aboard the Wind Surf in 2006. Raised at the knee of his multi-media artistic mother, it was a natural extension for Charlton to take up framing at an early age. He has studied many of the classical forms, which has lead to representations of his art and framing in collections on five continents. His teaching and studies, have taken him around the world. Currently, along with retail framing, he represents Frank's Fabrics for Framers, teaches seminars (most recently at the PPFA Annual Convention), and is a world-recognized writer with articles appearing in DECOR, Picture Framing Magazine, trade journals and other general public magazines.
Morning Seminar
8:45 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Socio-Anthropological History of Frames & Framing
In the 27,000 known years of creating artworks, man has only been concertedly framing for about the last 600. This session examines the social and political influences that inspired the creation and changes in picture framing. From the icon, through the "periods" and "schools,", and up to modern times, the class examines the most pronounced forms of European and American framing that still influence what we sell today in our frame shops. Understanding where today's designs and frames come from, aids in the matching and selling of frame jobs for today and tomorrow.
Cost: $35/member; $50/non-member
Afternoon Workshop
1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Fabric Wrapping
Take your mat skills to a higher and more profitable level. Learn the basic time efficient way of wrapping a single mat for profit, then translate that skill into a waterfall or embossed double mat. A new and exciting "Flexible Fabric Fillet" will also be taught. The session will also cover seamless liners, mitered upholstered corners, retail pricing structures and how to maximize your wrapping.
Materials provided by Frank's Fabrics and Don Mar.
Cost: $70/member; $85/non-member
Sign up for both sessions and get a $15 discount!
Evening Mini Trade Show, Meeting & Program
Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
Sponsor display tables, nibbles, and networking.
7:15 p.m.
Featuring Fabric Financially
"Pro-active framing" is the new standard for pushing your business past survival. It is no longer 1964 when a store could just "offer" items and services. Big Boxes and the
Internet are eating your lunch and keeping the change by doing this, but at a whole larger more efficient level. Just opening the door 10 minutes early and staying 30 minutes later won't ring the register anymore. Adding fabric to your line-up can grow your bottom line larger then any other change you can make, but just adding isn't enough, you need to "feature". Baer will show you how to feature, think and understand fabric in ways that will make higher sales a wrap.
Display tables and networking continue until 10:30 p.m.
