Just a reminder to my friends.

We learned a long time ago that backing up critical data is a good thing to do. Monday afternoon that theory was proven. Again.

The guys at my neighborhood computer store, the ones who build all my compuuters, took about fifteen minutes to replace the failed hard drive, which was a complete loss. No warning - just the "blue screen of death", and it was finished.

Fortunately, all of my critical data from Quick Books Pro, all my document files, articles, photos, and class handouts were backed up just the day before. No data lost.

Still, I've spent many hours of the the past two days reloading & configuring all of the programs & settings. But when I get discouraged at that waste of time, I count my blessings. I haven't lost any data.

Welcome back, Jim!

very good -

did you have a duplicate hard drive to swap with the programs - or did you have to load the programs from CD's.

I have a "Ghost" copy hard drive that I have a home. I refresh the copied drive 3-4 times a year.

Raid is good if one drive fails, but wont protect you from some things. (a virus that erases the data, corruption, fire, theft, etc) It's great when combined with other daily backup methods.

Oh, and it kills bugs dead too!

External hard disk (USB) backup drive is good too.

There are programs, Ghost from Norton for example, that can make an exact copy of the current hard disk (Windows and all) just in case.

I'll say it again - accessories/system tools/files and settings wizard. Run it periodically and you will be able to quickly restore all of those crazy little things that are important to you - like passwords, cookies, favorites, configurations, etc.
