any thoughts on how to attach baby shoes (gum rubber soles) to a mat for shadowbox so as not to damage them?

Yes, although I can't for the life of me describe it so it makes sense. it involves foamcore strips cut with a bevel that will engage on top of the sole, between it and the upper. Then covered with fabric and the shoes just snugly fit in.
