I have just gone to the Decor web site and read that the Expo next week has been cancelled. A most difficult decision, and, no doubt, an agonizing one. God bless us all.

What a bummer, any suggestions what I can do for five days in Atlanta on my own, all travel plans are made and paid for.

I applaud Pfingsten for having the courage to do something both so difficult and so costly.

URGENT NOTICE
DECOR EXPO-ATLANTA CANCELLED

September 14, 2001

Dear Exhibitors and Attendees,

Out of respect for those who died in the tragic events that have occurred this week and in appreciation for everyone’s feelings of safety, we have decided that it is in the best interest of all involved to cancel next week’s DECOR Expo–Atlanta. In some ways, this was a very easy decision to make, in other ways it was extremely difficult, as we’re sure you will all appreciate.

Since DECOR Expo-Atlanta has established itself as the primary fall sales channel in the art and framing industry, the show’s cancellation poses a very unfortunate situation. However, what is far more important is the safety and well being of the people in our industry and around the world. We will not place our customers and partners in the art and framing community in a position where they feel they “must” attend an event simply because it’s going on, regardless of their own emotions or feelings. As important as this show is to the industry, it is far more important for everyone to be close to family during these troubled times.

We, as show management, have been greatly impressed with the sentiments of both the exhibitors and the buyers from around the world that we have heard from over the last few days. These people have pledged their support for whatever decision that is made. You are truly a remarkable group of people, and we greatly appreciate the input you gave us. It was vital in helping us arrive at this decision.

Over the next few weeks, we will communicate closely with all of you regarding the logistical details of this difficult decision—both in terms of scheduling and finances. We ask for your patience as we assess the many important ramifications of this cancellation, as we are all in the same situation. Our promise to you is that we will continue to communicate with and listen to you, and we will do the right thing.

Thank you once again for your support during these trying times. We do believe strongly that, as a people, as a nation and as an industry, we need to move forward from this tragic event. But there must also be time for grief and healing. Hopefully, the cancellation of this show will allow for that.

Sincerely,

Joe Bennett

A very noble gesture. We as vendors and manufacturers will survive. All I ask is that you be patient when your reps have to visit longer into the Christmas season this year so you get all the latest updates.

Dermot:

As I stated on the PPFA Hitchhikers Forum, I'd first try to get my tickets refunded. Obviously, this is an unusual circumstance and maybe airlines are a little more accomodating due to these circumstances. And, if you're like most folks, the arilines honor tickets for up to one year, so it would be in Decor's best interest I would think to schedule next year's ABC under that one year deadline.

However, if you're intent on travelling to Atlanta--and Iused to live there-- you'll find loads to do in five days. Just rent a car, grab a tour book and knock yourself out.

Even outside Atlanta there are interesting sights: the mountains, the lakes, all within one- to one and a half-hours' drive.

If you don't rent a car, there are museums, upscale boutiques, etc. either within walking distance or within subway ride.

Gee--I make myself wish I were living there again.

If you are interested in some high design type stuff find out how to get to Miami Circle: loads of upper end interior design shops and funky art ideas.

Any way you do it, Atlanta is a fun place to visit, and this time of year is 'way cooler (temperature wise) than in the summer.

Good luck, God Bless

I am very disappointed about this cancellation.
I have only $200.00 invested in a non-refundable airline ticket, but I am certain that others in our industry will stand to lose so much more.
I fear, with the economy faltering even as slightly as it has this past year, that we will see some sort of "shake-out" in our industry especially now with this turn of events. I do not look forward to that.
I cannot imagine that grinding our economy even to a temporary halt will do any sort of honor to those who suffer.
If we are going to go to war-er-I mean- commence on a military campaign in the coming months, it is reasonable to expect a long road ahead full of unspeakable heartbreaks. The sturdy Bohunk in me says that we must persevere to prevail.
I am being a little dramatic, I know!!! But my personal plan is to apply even more "hustle" to getting and keeping even more business so that I can send even more of a donation to the Red Cross. And pitcher framin' is how I do that!
And I must also admit that hangin' with a few other framers and ridin' that framin' vibe would have been of great comfort to me.
Please forgive my most-likely-to-be unpopular opinion and have at it!
IMHO,
Edie the FG

Also: The Realist in me wants to know WHEN it will be safe to fly again? Methinks, never.

Framing Goddess: I think all of us will be disapointed at the cancelation. Our company was going to trim our staff from 6 to 3. Fear of flying....no! We were just worried that once getting to Atlanta, some nut case would try to get on a plane with a knife again and our management staff wouldn't be able to get back for days. I like your idea, "Use this time to do more framin!!!!so I can donate more money to the Red Cross (relief in general?). Great idea!

Instead of taking a loss for purchased airline tickets, trade them for tickets to the next major trade show -- Las Vegas.

Next January, Las Vegas will be the first major trade show in almost a year.

It will also be the exhibitors' first national exposure for new product launches since last March, the first opportunity for framers to attend the new classes scheduled for Atlanta, and the next opportunity for all of us Grumblers and Hitchhikers to meet.

It should be quite a good event.

See you there.

Dermot,
If you go to Atlanta, try to take in a show at the Fox Theater. I went in '83, and it's the most impressive place I've ever seen. If you get really lucky, they'll be showing Gone With the Wind. Man! They play along on the 5 manual, 61 rank Moller pipe organ! It is to die for! Talk about power.

The Fox is a very interesting place to see, even if you can't get to a show. There's almost always something going on there, though. DO NOT go to downtown Atlanta after dark. We had a policeman advise us to go anywhere but downtown after dark. But, that was 18 years ago. Things may have changed. Also, try to get to Lennox Square Mall. It's a huge mall with a lot to see.

I just got off the phone with Ambassador and all hotel rooms have been automatically cancelled. I also spoke to Delta and they are most accomodating and no one should lose any money. They offered a two year use it anytime ticket with no fees and I was lead to believe that with a little persistence, I could probably get a cash refund. These people are going through the ringer and didn't feel the need to be a pain. We'll go somewhere and use the tickets-no problem.

I hope i wasn't the cause of this turn of events. however I didn't know of the cancellation until 5:00 pm .At that time I called both the Embassy Suites and Delta airlines and both very graciously agreed to cancel and refund any payments made with my Credit card since the Expo had been canceled beyond my control.
I didn't however use the surveces of Ambassador,we made both reservations on our own.I will also miss seeing all of you but there will be another time.

Dermot:
If you go to Atlanta, you should contact Bob Carter. Seems there might be 12 dozen KK's just waiting to be sampled.

Or maybe make it an education experience unto itself. Try and locate some of the local Atlanta framers and do a meet & greet.
Good luck

From one who has lost at least six close friends in this disaster, I would like to convey to those of you who have lost a couple hundred of bucks, ... well, tough. This is the kind of sleazy commercial thoughtlessness that many of you have supposedly rebeled against .... I recall some prattle about "a forum for us all to get cozy in" or some such crap.

A commercial enterprise like Atlanta means nothing in the light of this kind of horror. You should be ashamed of yourselves for lamenting such an insignificant loss.

I will continue to monitor this site for useful framing information ... and will also continue to ignore the sophomoric jive that accompanies much of what is relayed.

Thanks everyone for your kind advice.

First could I apologies if my remark "what a bummer" caused offence, we use that term in Ireland to convey our feelings when plans are changed for the best, it is never used in a derogatory way.

Second I'm canceling my travel plans, not to give in to the thugs who were responsible for the horrifying events which took place in the US but in order to allow those people in Europe who have family in the US and have being directly affected by events there as quick an opportunity of traveling to the US.

People in Europe have to take planes to be with there loved ones in the US and and with the back log on travel I'm only to happy that my seat will go to someone who has a much more urgent need for it than I have.

Regrettably I will not get to meet all the friends I have made on The Grumble as quickly as I would have liked to and more importantly to share directly my feelings of sadness and grief for a people and country I love very much.

Keep the faith.

Dermot

I tend to agree that thoughts of financial loss caused by the cancellation of the trade show are petty. Though I did not infer that attitude on previous posts.

My concern is that by canceling the show and many other events that we are only giving the terrorists another victory.

Not a day has gone by that I have not shed a tear for the victims and the survivors.

We got luck as we bartered for airline and hotel. We were able to cancel everything...It's just as well that they cancelled, with all the uncertanty about flying these days. Maybe Las Vegas will make up for this, but I doubt it.

For any appearance of being uncaring to the plight of those who Lost there life in the events that caused the cancellation of the Atlanta show I APOLOGIZE.
I can assure all of you especially Framingfool the loss I was trying to help avoied shouldn't even have the same word used as the loss Framingfoool described.

I assure you it was only brought up in an attempt to help others. If I came across as being Insensative and Uncarring ,i can not express with words how sorry I am.
I once again typed before thinking . I will Never do this again.
