Recently, I saw some paintings on a 3/16" approx height
canvas board which had a metal (or alum) center.

This artist used it for its light weight, and durability, instead of stretching his canvases on stretcher bars anymore. these paintings were approx 40x40....

Can anyone assist me with the name/brand of this "board"?

Thanks

Sue check with a local sign materials distributor. These panels are most likely a printing product that has been adapted for artwork. Google Sign Supply USA and call them. They are under new ownership with a new name but it will come up. If they don't carry it they will know who does.

I saw artists boards like that in smaller sizes at an art supply store in Louisville. Can't remember the name, though. They were pretty expensive.

No not honeycombed. It looked just layered...canvas maybe attached to a thin paper, which was attached to the alum, which was attached to the final substrate board. The solid group was less than 1/4"....

??? is this stump the SWAB (ESPN)?

I'm not familiar with metal-center boards, but aluminum composite sheeting is a substrate of growing popularity among photographic and digital-imaging processors. That is, two thin sheets of aluminum with PVC in between. These boards are very rigid, lightweight, and easy to work with. Check out popular brands such as ePanel and DiBond, and you can probably find lower-cost alternative brands readily available in any metropolitan area.

Kool Tack is now coating 3/16" aluminum composite sheeting with their low-temperature dry mounting adhesive, which is thick enough to securely bond with the texture of canvas. It works great in a mechanical or vacuum press, in only a couple of minutes' dwell time at 160 degrees.

If you want a sample, contact your local Kool Tack distributor or Frame Specialties in Elkhart, Indiana. Or me -- I'm working with the company and have a few pieces leftover from testing.
