There is a very interesting article in the current (3/27) New Yorker magazine. The focus is finding the appropriate frame for a painting owned by the Brooklyn Museum, but it discusses frame making, gilding, and the aesthetics of frames.

According to their website, it's written by someone named Leo Carey. Sounds interesting- I'll have to track that down.
