I am new here and what most of you are talking about is framing which has been interesting and helpful. When time permits I love hearing what all of you are posting. Just curious...do most of you sell art as well or are most of you more framing shops? If you sell art, what art is selling? Are there any galleries visiting this site that sell the artist P. Buckley Moss?

We have a small gallery space in our shop. More paintings hanging on the wall than an "official" gallery. Also have fair trade items and local artists that make art with found objects.

What's selling? Mainly items under $100. Stuff over has sold, but only after three or four "look sees".

Local images sell. Most poster and limited edition art is dead. I don't even offer special order art because they will take up hours of your time and then buy it from artdotcrap anyway.

I don't know if P Buckley Moss sells any longer other than areas with high concentration of Amish population. The Amish don't buy it but it is somewhat local image in those areas.

Art and framing here.

What sells? Depends really on your area / demographics.

Here it is a small family town, almost all are married with kids, close to the water / ocean, horse farms, etc

People here tend to like family scenes, nautical themes, antique prints, landscapes, nature, horses, etc. And absolutely no abstract art! (I framed exactly ONE abstract piece the last 5 years and it was brought in by a couple form another town).

My business is historically 33/33/33 original artwork, antique maps and prints, and framing. The fine art part has been dead since Sept. (same story with many galleries/artists I have spoken to) but is starting to pick up now. Still, what is selling is pieces in the 500-1000 range. People still seem to have cold feet about the mid & big priced stuff.
Antique maps are still strong for me (we've been doing that over 30 years), if I find the collectors what they want, they are still buying-

I have a very small frame shop with little on the walls for sale - my shop is mainly a work shop. I do frame different types of art for the art shows that run about every other weekend in Minneapolis and the larger surrounding towns and including all large cities in connecting states. What I find sells is the local art, some of the vintage/antique art and prints, and some historic type art. What I have a very hard time selling is "wild life" ducks, pheasants, fish, etc.; also Kouba, Kincade, Redlin, and the likes are very hard sells for me. It seems that they can be purchased at the estate auctions or major chain stores - go figure.

50% framing, 30% home decor ( metal and wood dimensional ) and silk plants/decor lamps/decor mirrors, and 20% art..mostly originals and high end limited edition giclees and lithos...some poster and lower end prints..usually sell custom frame job to art buyers, but not always.

Welcome!

Hi Laura,

Welcome to the Grumble. You might find just a handful of Moss Dealers here. You also might find some former Moss Dealers. The subject of Moss usually does not come up here, but now and then you might find a framer that needs a print. There is a search function and you could do a search for "Moss" to see anything about Moss.

Framing 70%, home decor/gifts 20%, prints 10%. Prints are 99.9% open edition. (these are "rough" numbers)

I would not say that the print biz is dead, it all depends on your market and how people perceive you in your market. traditionally an independant frame shop in a strip center or one that is free standing will not sell much in art, people percieve them as a framer only. I am mall based and advertise that I have prints so more people come to me for art.

What sells once again depends on your market, someone earlier said that they do not sell abstracts, that is my biggest seller.

Is there anyone here who sells, in addition to framing, original art in the $500-3000 range?

yeah that is the bulk of our business .. most expensive piece we have right now it around 15000 .. so it is a medium priced gallery but the bulk is in that 500 to 3000 range. ...

we sell art in that range...highest in gallery right now is 22,500, but we sell many in the 300-500 range a few in the 1500-3000 range...however the sales of this art have drastically declined with the Florida economy.
