So the gun is not shooting points into the frame far enough, and when I pull the trigger the screw to tighten it moves, could the threads be stripped on the tightening screw ? Kind of what I am thinking...worth a repair or just get the black gun? Thanks

There are a couple of springs in there. The one that has to do with that knob likes to break and then it won't shoot the brads in very well. It can also make the knob seem stripped like you describe.

I generally end up chucking it and buying a new one because I hate money, but I understand they are a real bugger to replace. If you're gunna chuck it anyway then open it up and give it a try. United has replacement parts. The Fletcher part number is 12-714. This MIGHT be it: http://www.unitedmfrs.com/cart/detail.cfm?item=4253M

In which case it's like 1% the cost of a new gun.

We order them from the Fletcher website and keep a couple in the shop in case of emergency. Them cost like $1.69 and are not a major pain to replace. It may take a couple tries, but it's not bad.

If you use a point gun regularly (Brits use one on pretty much every job) and have an air compressor, invest in a pneumatic one, you won't look back.

I have an 'Omer' - it has not jammed or misfired in about 7 years. It takes several brands of flexible and semi-rigid points and the strips are about twice as long too. The semi-rigid points fired pneumatically offer far more strength/support than a rigid point fired manually.

Rigid points would mean a second gun, but there's really no need, although I am considering one so that we can have gunfights! I wish they'd invent a pneumatic point gun that you can charge with compressed air because the airline gives away your postion.

This should do the trick John.

Less Deep

Less just replaced his spring in his regular point driver after 15 years. WOW what a difference. Would have never guessed. Tried stretching the spring. Did not really work. Now I want to change the Flexi driver spring and buy some spares. Changing them every five years MORE or LESS is probably not a bad Idea. Do they publish how many average frames a spring will last? I'm sure Fletcher would rather sell you a new gun. I wonder if engineers are allowed to use probably? Probably!
